Job summary

The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant II in Laboratory Services. This role performs sample processing and may assist with phlebotomy duties as assigned to support patient care.

Minimum qualifications include two years of related experience and a Texas driver’s license. Preference for certified phlebotomists (ASCP, ACA, AMT, NCCT or NHA).

Qualifications

• Two (2) years related experience.
• Valid State of Texas Driver’s License.
• Phlebotomy course completion or phlebotomy/clinical processing experience preferred.
• Preferred: Certified Phlebotomist certifications (ASCP, ACA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA).
• Lab Assistant I requires phlebotomy training or related experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform essential duties and competencies in phlebotomy or related clinical tasks.
• Handle computer functions for patient registration, blood collection, and specimen management.
• Determine acceptability of patient samples.
• Prepare, store, and transfer samples for testing.
• Perform quality control procedures on equipment.
• Maintain records of inventory, maintenance, and daily quality control.
• Work independently within guidelines and meet urgent patient and system needs.
