The Research Assistant in the Kostic Laboratory at Beth Israel Lahey Health conducts bench experiments spanning bacterial culture, immune cell work, and animal studies to understand how gut bacteria influence the immune system in type 1 diabetes.

The role requires hands-on lab experience, ability to work independently and in a team, and meticulous record keeping. On-site, full-time position with a focus on accuracy and data integrity.

Formación

• Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, or related field.
• Entry level with hands-on laboratory research experience (undergrad, thesis, post-bac, or lab position).
• Preferred: mouse handling (oral gavage, injections, blood collection, dissection); flow cytometry, cell or tissue culture, sterile technique, or ELISA; exposure to anaerobic culture, extracellular vesicles, nanoparticle characterization (NTA, EM), chromatography (FPLC/SEC), or PCR/Western blot.
• Demonstrated reliability, organization, and attention to detail, including ownership of work and meeting deadlines.
• Accurate record-keeping and clear written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work independently after training, and collaboratively within a small team.
• Willingness to work with mice, human blood samples, and biohazardous materials; training provided.
• Familiarity with FlowJo, GraphPad Prism, R, or Python.

Responsabilidades

• Culture bacterial strains, including under anaerobic conditions, and purify bacterial extracellular vesicles (EVs) by tangential-flow filtration and SEC.
• Characterize EVs by nanoparticle tracking analysis, electron microscopy, and endotoxin testing; prepare samples for MS.
• Culture primary immune cells from mouse and human sources.
• Perform functional immunology assays (cytokine ELISAs, multicolor flow cytometry).
• Support in vivo mouse studies with dosing, glucose monitoring, and meticulous record-keeping.
• Harvest and process spleen and pancreatic lymph nodes for immunophenotyping; assist with flow cytometry and histology.
• Conduct all animal work under approved IACUC protocols and safety requirements.
• Process PBMCs from healthy and T1D donors; perform cell-based assays on human samples.
• Maintain meticulous records in an electronic lab notebook.
• Prepare reagents, manage inventory, and help maintain shared equipment.
• Organize, analyze, and summarize data using FlowJo, GraphPad Prism, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.
