Job summary

The University of Wisconsin–Madison is hiring a Researcher I to serve as the lab's operational lead and bench research support. The role divides time between managing purchasing, inventory, biosafety, onboarding, and supervising personnel (~50%), and providing hands-on experimental assistance (~50%).

The lab focuses on microbial pathogenesis, microbiome science, and bacteriophage research. Requirements include strong organizational skills, ability to manage competing timelines, and experience

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of combined experience in lab management and academic research roles.
  • Proficiency with core molecular biology and microbiology techniques.
  • Experience with supply ordering, shipping and receiving, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate student staff and onboarding/training new lab members.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding.
  • Oversees laboratory facility maintenance, biosafety, and regulatory compliance; schedules and executes routine maintenance for specialized equipment.
  • Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and documents results according to policies.
  • Assists with development of research methodologies and procedures.
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and disseminates information to stakeholders.
  • Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership.
  • Supervises undergraduate staff and manages lab scheduling and workflows.
  • Trains individuals on equipment operations and research protocols.
  • Serves as central node for purchasing and inventory management; reconciles transactions.
