Job summary

NYU Langone Health is seeking a Lab Manager - Hematopathology to oversee the hematopathology/flow cytometry division at the ACC 38th Street Molecular Pathology Laboratory. You will supervise staff, ensure quality, and drive process improvements while managing costs and regulatory compliance.

The role involves developing workflows, leading staff development, maintaining policy manuals, and coordinating validation and testing with the Hematopathology Director.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in lab science or related discipline.
  • NYSDOH Licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience in flow cytometry.
  • ASCP certification and advanced degrees preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees flow cytometry staff, assigns duties, schedules, and overtime as needed.
  • Develops workflows to optimize laboratory operations and chairs staff meetings.
  • Maintains policies, procedures, and QA/QC programs per regulatory standards.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lab Manager - Hematopathology.

In this role, the successful candidate oversees the technical operations of hematopathology/flow cytometry division at ACC 38th Street Molecular Pathology Laboratory. Responsible for managing quality and quantity of work, procedures, personnel, and costs. Formulates goals, assigns objectives, establishes standards of practice, and ensures continuity of services at all sites. Supervises and ensures the proper performance of all techniques and procedures in the flow cytometry laboratory. Oversees validations, implementation of new tests, quality control and quality improvement. Assures compliance with regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Management of flow cytometry staff: assigns responsibilities, establishes work hours, monitors staffing and approves necessary overtime. Develops new workflow plans to ensure efficient laboratory operations. Chairs monthly staff meetings to communicate relevant issues. Prioritizes work responsibly and consistently with needs of department. Reviews technical work performed by staff to ensure consistent high quality.
  2. Staff Development, Evaluation, Counseling and Personnel related activities: Oversees supervision of the flow cytometry staff. Interviews prospective employees, evaluates and documents staff performance and performs personnel counseling/discipline. Monitors staff workload and productivity. Recognizes and identifies staff needs and develops programs to meet needs. Participates in staff retention and recruitment activities. Provides staff in-service/training as required. Conducts annual performance and competency reviews and maintain employee files. Offers guidance and provides resources for improving performance standards. Ensures staff compliance with all required annual training.
  3. Procedure Development: Develops, implements and ensures that flow cytometry laboratory policies and procedures are current and relevant and consistent with regulatory standards. Maintains and updates policy and procedure manuals for the laboratory. Ensures required sign-off by staff & directors. Oversees test validation in conjunction with the Hematopathology Director. Establishes compliant quality control processes for testing.
  4. Quality Control: Participates in ongoing development/modification of the laboratory's quality control program and requirements for regulatory agencies as they relate to the flow cytometry laboratory. Develops quality control standards for flow cytometry processes. Ensures that all quality control logs and equipment and temperature records are maintained. Ensures laboratory compliance with all accreditation agency standards (including: Joint Commission, CAP, and NYSDOH). Monitors and maintains required departmental and statistical records and reports. Works collaboratively with Senior Administrative Director, Director of AP Operations, Director of Quality Systems and Medical Director on QA initiatives.
  5. Planning and Budgeting/Cost Containment: Participates in cost control activities by seeking the most effective method of delivering quality services, and maintains an awareness of the cost impact of decisions and actions. Utilizes audit reports, MFR data and Epic Beaker data to effectively manage lab & enhance lab productivity. Understands operational and capital budget process as required by director.
  6. Equipment procurement: Meets with vendors and evaluates new equipment and technologies. Works with vendors to secure reagent and contract pricing. Ensures all equipment is consistently maintained. Orders and uses supplies and resources effectively. Monitors and maintains inventory control; monitor and schedule all standing orders for flow cytometry laboratory.

7. Time utilization/Behavioral Standards: Acts appropriately in prioritizing and coordinating responsibilities and duties to ensure smooth operation of the laboratory consistent with needs of department. Cooperates and communicates effectively with staff and directors. Follows up requests in timely and effective manner.

8. Reports/Documentation: Works in conjunction with Senior Administrative Director and Director of AP Operations to prepare reports regarding business analysis and future growth opportunities. Ensures compliance with all departmental documentation.

9. Flow Cytometry Tech Duties: Participates in specimen prep, processing and analysis of flow cytometric data of clinical cases for diagnostic purposes when necessary. Results other tests (CD34, lymphocyte subset) as necessary. Performs QA/QC of technical work.

10. House Staff Training: Participates by assisting pathologists in training residents and fellows as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in the laboratory science, biology, chemistry or related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • NYSDOH Licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience in flow cytometry.
  • Effective oral, written, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates above average knowledge or expertise in dealing with scientific principals involved in the methodology performed; as well as alternative methodologies and their application to a given situation.
  • Excellent computer ability.
Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in laboratory science, biology, chemistry, management, business, public health or related field. ASCP Certification in Flow Cytometry. 6-10 years supervisory experience. Knowledge of Epic Beaker LIS.

Salary

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $160,000 - $189,000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
