Job Description

The Laboratory Manager at Aztalan Bio is a full-time leadership position responsible for overseeing laboratory operations and quality assurance at the company’s biorefinery in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and consistency of laboratory testing while maintaining compliance with applicable industry standards and federal, state, and local safety regulations. The Laboratory Manager develops and maintains laboratory policies, procedures, testing practices, quality control systems, information management systems, and facilities used to evaluate refinery feedstocks, intermediates, and finished products. Key responsibilities include maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment, recommending new equipment, preparing and shipping samples to customers and external laboratories, coordinating third-party testing, and developing testing practices that demonstrate reproducible results both internally and externally. The position also works closely with operations and commercial teams to investigate finished-product quality concerns and ensure products consistently meet customer specifications and quality standards.In addition to technical and quality responsibilities, the Laboratory Manager leads and develops the laboratory team by hiring and training employees, conducting evaluations, supporting employee development, resolving workplace issues, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. The role assists with developing and managing laboratory capital and operating budgets, including expenses associated with specialized third-party testing and benchmarking activities. The Laboratory Manager also helps establish measurement standards, certification samples, prototype fuels, and related quality systems, while working with industry and governmental quality assurance organizations to obtain laboratory certifications for specialized products such as asphalt and military fuels. Safety is an essential component of the position, with responsibility for promoting a safe and healthy workplace and ensuring laboratory activities comply with established safety policies and regulatory requirements.

Job Requirements

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, along with at least five years of experience in laboratory quality control, laboratory operations, or similar refinery operations. A strong understanding of refinery processes, unit interactions, and applicable stream and chemical quality standards is required, while previous experience managing quality programs is preferred. Candidates should also be proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office and Excel, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with employees and other departments. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong organizational and prioritization skills, including the ability to distinguish between urgent and important tasks, maintain focus, and work effectively under pressure.
