Job summary

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Weeks Laboratory is seeking a Lab Manager to support a senior faculty member’s research program by overseeing laboratory operations and supervising staff. You will help develop efficient procedures, maintain inventories, ensure GLP-compliant practices, and coordinate with administration to enable high-quality research in cancer biology in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline is required.
• Master’s degree is preferred.
• 3–5 years of experience managing a research laboratory in biological sciences.
• Strong HR knowledge and solid writing skills are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Implements, maintains, and improves standard procedures to enhance laboratory efficiency.
• Monitors the work of research staff to ensure adherence to good laboratory practices.
• Maintains inventory and manages ordering of laboratory supplies and equipment.
• Ensures proper use, maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment.
• Serves as Laboratory Safety Officer.
• Manages mouse colonies as needed in consultation with the Scientific Program Manager.
• Assists PI in monitoring collaborations with other programs.
• Maintains Weeks Lab clinical, genomic, and epidemiologic databases.
• Monitors laboratory expenditures and training compliance for staff.

Job description

The Lab Manager position facilitates a senior faculty member’s research program through the management of laboratory operations. For the Weeks Laboratory, a multidisciplinary dry lab focused on clinical and human genetic data to predict and prevent blood cancers in adults, the Lab Manager oversees administrative and research operations on behalf of the PI, supervises research staff, and develops and maintains efficient laboratory procedures. This role reports directly to the PI and works closely with research administration and other departmental partners.

• Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline required; Master’s degree preferred
• A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in management of research laboratory in the field of biological sciences
• Strong knowledge of HR activities and solid writing skills preferred
• Familiarity with cancer research laboratory operations including equipment maintenance, safety, compliance and record keeping

Laboratory Operations

• Implements, maintains, and improves standard procedures to enhance laboratory efficiency.
• Monitors the work of research staff to ensure adherence to good laboratory practices.
• Maintains inventory and manages the ordering of laboratory supplies (e.g., flow antibodies, restriction enzymes, proteins, plasmids, DNA, etc.).
• Ensures the proper use, maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment.
• Serves as the Laboratory Safety Officer.
• As applicable, efficiently manages mouse colonies through the proper allocation of technical support resources in response to scientific needs, in consultation with the Scientific Program Manager.

Scientific Operations

• Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) in monitoring, enabling, and facilitating collaborations with other programs.
• Actively contributes to research projects, as appropriate.
• May assist with data entry and quality control.
• Maintains Weeks Lab clinical, genomic, and epidemiologic databases.

Administrative Responsibilities

• Monitors laboratory expenditures.
• Ensures all laboratory staff remain compliant with DFCI, NIH, and sponsor-mandated training requirements.

Staff Supervision and Support

• Assists the PI with counseling, teaching, training, mentoring, orientation, in-service education, and continuing education for laboratory staff and trainees.
• Supervises research staff, including technicians, specialists, and trainees.
• Hires, develops, and manages staff to achieve organizational goals.
• Sets clear expectations, provides feedback, and monitors staff performance for quality, efficiency, and compliance with policies and procedures.
• Mentors staff, supports career development, and foster a positive and productive work environment.

• Exceptional people-management and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects in a complex, fast-paced environment.
• Excellent quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate all aspects of a problem or opportunity and make or facilitate appropriate and timely decisions.
