Job summary

IDEXX Laboratory Lead role is based in Glen Burnie, MD, overseeing Medical Lab Technicians and Sample Management Technicians in a fast-paced setting. Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent; a 2–4‑year science degree is preferred.
  • Experience using a microscope to review slides and identify sample elements.
  • 3–5+ years in a laboratory; experience setting up, running, reading lab tests, and operating equipment preferred.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-oriented, with Veterinary Technician or Medical Laboratory Technician experience preferred.
  • Physical requirements include standing/sitting, lifting up to 50 lb, and vision requirements.

Responsibilities

As an IDEXX Laboratory Lead, you will perform laboratory testing that helps veterinarians diagnose and treat pets. In this role:
  • You will oversee the work of Medical Lab Technicians and / or Sample Management Technicians (though they will not be your direct reports).
  • You will coach and lead the work of others, and help the team reach business goals.
  • You will coordinate the team’s workflow.
  • You will problem‑solve, from trouble‑shooting diagnostic analyzers to resolving situational workflow and challenges with turnaround times.
  • You will use automated analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries, and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
  • You will perform diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal, or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day.
  • You will set up and run lab tests and read and release results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).

What you need to succeed:
  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience; a 2-, 3- or 4-year degree in a science‑related field is preferred
  • Experience using a microscope to review slides and identify the various elements of a sample
  • Ideally 3-5+ years experience working in a laboratory, although training can be provided; experience setting up, running, reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers) preferred
  • Attention to detail, organized with the ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced environment
  • Be a team‑oriented worker
  • Veterinary Technician (RVT, LVT, CVT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT or MT) experience preferred
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab, i.e. standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability (close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus)

This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

  • Target pay of $28.00 - 30.00 / hour, depending on experience

Schedule:
  • You will be working 40 hours / week. The schedule will be Tuesday through Saturday, 6:00am - 2:30pm. There is an every‑other Monday rotation; when you work a Monday you will have a day off during the week, so that you are only ever working 5 days/week.
  • Flexibility to stay longer as needed is a huge plus.
