The Institute for Engineering in Medicine at the University of Minnesota invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Visible Heart Laboratories (VHL), a leading translational research and education center focused on cardiovascular physiology and medical device development.
The VHL conducts groundbreaking research from cellular to whole-organ investigations, specializing in cardiac medical devices, multimodal imaging, anatomy, and preservation methods. It offers extensive training to students and professionals, maintains a large library of cardiac specimens, and collaborates with industry leaders like Medtronic and Stratasys.
The IEM aims to translate science into medical practice through interdisciplinary research and education, supported by the Medical School and College of Science and Engineering. It encompasses four pillars, including Professional Education and Outreach, which the VHL Director will help lead.
The VHL Director is a 12-month academic administrative role, reporting to the IEM Director, with a faculty appointment in a relevant department. Responsibilities include strategic planning, research oversight, teaching, mentoring, stakeholder engagement, and financial management.
Required: PhD, MD, or DVM; expertise in human physiology or related fields; experience in pre-clinical research and medical technology innovation; leadership skills; ability to secure funding; commitment to diversity and mentorship.
Preferred: Distinguished scholarly record in cardiovascular research; active research environment with large animal models; potential for tenure-track faculty appointment.
