Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA seeks a dedicated Lab Support Specialist to communicate patient results clearly to laboratory clients and to serve as a resource on test requirements, specimen submission, and lab policies.

The role also provides dispatch support for lab couriers, trains new staff, and participates in area‑specific support activities, with additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; or MLA CSC and CLIA education requirements.
• Experience: 2 years relevant experience; or MLA CSC with no experience required.
• License/Certification: MLA(ASCP) within 12 months of hire.

Provides customer service and laboratory-related communication regarding specimen submission and reporting of results to healthcare providers that use the UVA Medical Laboratories.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent; or Medical Laboratory Assistant Career Study Certificate (CSC) or an official letter from the College stating MLA coursework has been completed. Must meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act & Amendment (CLIA) education requirements for the complexity of testing performed.

Experience: High School Graduate or Equivalent – 2 years of relevant experience; or Medical Laboratory Assistant Career Study Certificate (CSC) – no experience required.

License/Certification: MLA(ASCP) within 12 months of hire.

Physical Demands

Job requires sitting, standing for prolonged periods, frequently, bending/stooping and repetitive motion: extension & flexion at wrist. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly; ability to lift/push/pull less than 20 lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The starting base rate for this role is $17.25 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
