Job summary

Ochsner Health in Louisiana seeks a Lab Clerk to support the department's clerical functions and maintain lab areas' quality control at select locations. You will interact with doctors, nurses and patients, enter data, and ensure timely handling of lab orders and results.

Responsibilities include using EPIC/SOFT systems, coordinating with departments, and maintaining inventory and equipment with an emphasis on privacy and accuracy. High school diploma and <1 year in a medical setting required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Less than 1 year experience in a medical office, lab or customer service setting.
  • Basic paper work, data entry and report completion skills.
  • Demonstrates organization, communication and teamwork abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provides client services support to facilitate delivery of patient lab results using EPIC and SOFT.
  • Communicates test result delays to the House Coordinator and Emergency Department.
  • Facilitates communication between labs and departments across Hospitals.
  • Enters external Home Health orders into Epic for proper billing.
  • Acts as lab call center and handles lab supply orders and distribution.
  • Discards outdated specimens according to guidelines.
  • Monitors and cleans equipment and performs quality control on glassware.
  • Counts inventory weekly and checks expiration dates.
  • Adapts communication to patient population and complies with privacy rules.

This job is responsible for clerical functions which support the department and at some locations, will maintain the overall cleanliness of the lab areas including appropriate quality control functions and equipment monitoring.

Education
  • Required - High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
Work Experience
  • Required - less than 1 year experience in a medical office, office, or customer service setting
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Basic skills such as reading, writing, spelling, and math to complete daily paper work, write or fill out reports.
  • Working knowledge to efficiently use copy machine, calculator, computer and printer operations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates versatility and cooperation.
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
Job Duties
  • Provides client services support through assisting internal and external doctors, nurses, labs, etc. to facilitate the delivery of patient laboratory results using EPIC and the Laboratory computer system, SOFT.
  • Communicates issues regarding delays of tests results within the Laboratory to the House Coordinator and Emergency Department.
  • Facilitates communication between labs and different departments within all Hospitals.
  • Enters outside Home Health agency orders into Epic to ensure proper billing.
  • Acts as the call center for the lab ensuring the proper transfer of calls as to not impede laboratory staff from their core duties.
  • Receives laboratory supply orders for clinics, hospitals and external clients, and fills and distributes via lab courier.
  • Discards outdated specimens following established guidelines
  • Monitors and cleans equipment and performs appropriate quality control functions on glassware, checks pH levels and general surface cleaning.
  • Performs water checks for detergent residue and autoclaves spore checks adhering to laboratory policy.
  • Counts inventory weekly and checks expiration date according to proper procedure.
  • Appropriately discard biohazard waste daily.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
