Obtains blood samples and other non-blood specimens from patients, delivering samples to the laboratory as needed. Provides factual information regarding laboratory tests according to standard procedures. Responsibilities vary based on site needs.
High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, HiSET, TASC) from an accredited institution or governmental unit required. Non-U.S. diplomas must be evaluated for equivalency. CPR and Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification preferred. Graduation from a phlebotomy technical training program is strongly preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is strongly preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required depending on the specialty.
Knowledge of medical terminology through prior medical practice experience is preferred (up to 1 year).
Effective verbal and written communication skills are required. Strong interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation are essential. Proficiency with Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is preferred.
