Job Description:
Winchester Hospital, a member of Beth Israel Lahey Health, has a new Lab Associate opening on our Lab Services Team. Be part of the mission to deliver exceptional personalized care within our Top 10 Massachusetts recognized 223-bed hospital. Contribute to the Hospital’s mission by providing clerical and pre-analytical support related to lab specimen processing. This position impacts laboratory efficiency, physician/clinician satisfaction, and ultimately patient satisfaction by accurately recording receipt of specimens and ensuring timely follow-up on lab results.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience Preferred: At least one year of medical laboratory, clerical, or secretarial experience.
JOB FUNCTIONS
As part of the Laboratory team, this position:
- Receives specimens from multiple locations, accurately documenting patient information and lab test orders.
- Verifies appropriate specimen accompanies test requisition.
- Ensures specimen is properly labeled with two patient identifiers, date and time of collection, and initials of the collector.
- Attaches printed labels to specimens from physician offices if necessary.
- Completes the order, producing labels and essential documentation.
- Verifies insurance information and coordinates with Hospital registration and/or physician practices for billing.
- Investigates missing information in test requisitions.
- Issues ABN forms to patients when tests do not meet medical necessity.
- Prepares specimens for shipment or courier delivery to reference laboratories.
- Interacts with reference labs, physician offices, clinicians, and others, providing excellent customer service and clinical information within scope of practice.
- Orders and stocks supplies to ensure adequate inventory of reference lab and other materials, optimizing storage space.
- Answers phone inquiries professionally, providing lab results and test status updates.
- Runs reports, addresses data, provides results, and follows up on outstanding tests to improve lab efficiency and satisfaction.
- Performs pre-analytical specimen processing steps, including sorting, centrifuging, aliquoting, and generating work lists.
- Performs waived tests approved by CLIA and other regulatory agencies.
- Confirms received specimens match test requirements.
