Job Summary

Under limited supervision, and according to established procedures, performs laboratory support procedures including specimen collection or phlebotomy, order entry, processing, point of care testing, and transport of laboratory specimens and materials. Performs blood sample collection at least 25% of scheduled hours. Interacts courteously and professionally with patients, laboratory staff, and caregivers.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepares patient specimens for testing, focusing on preanalytic and post-analytic processes.
• Enters patient demographic and test order information into lab information systems accurately and timely, maintaining confidentiality.
• Performs blood sample collection or phlebotomy, demonstrating competency, productivity, and compassion.
• Supports a culture of exceptional customer service, adhering to HFHS Standards of Excellence.
• Reviews laboratory request forms for completeness, resolves discrepancies, and handles specimens carefully to maintain sample integrity.

Education and Experience Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and provide excellent customer service.
• Minimum six months of phlebotomy experience; new employees must pass competency evaluations.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance for off-site travel.
• Hospital or clinic laboratory experience preferred.
• Medical terminology familiarity preferred.
