Job summary

AtlantiCare is seeking a Lab Assistant I to support efficient laboratory operations, including collection, handling and preparation of specimens. You will verify and label samples, prepare slides, and help maintain supplies while upholding quality patient care.

The role may involve blood collection per procedures, contributing to performance improvement and team cooperation within the lab. Part-time schedule with lab environment exposure.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; bachelor's degree preferred for histology/cytology.
• ASCP/Phlebotomy certification preferred; CEUs required for incumbents.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and LAB systems expected after training.

ATLANTICARE _____________________________________________ROLE DESCRIPTION POSITION SUMMARY The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, handling and transporting specimens, preparation of slides, and maintaining necessary supplies. This role may include the collection of blood according to established procedures in a manner that supports quality patient care. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

Qualifications

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR HIGHEST LEVEL OF DEGREE REQUIRED BACHELORS DEGREE IN BIOLOGY OR RELATED FIELD STRONGLY PREFERRED FOR HISTOLOGY AND CYTOLOGY POSITIONS.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: ASCP/PHLEBOTOMY CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRY ELIGIBLE PREFERRED. PREVIOUS HOSPITAL PHLEBOTOMY EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR CERTIFICATION. INCUMMETS WORKING IN A PHLEBOTOMIST ROLE MUST MAINTAIN 12 CEUS ANNUALLY. BLS REQUIRED EFFECTIVE 1/1/2021, EXISTING INCUMMETS WITH HSAED WILL BE REQUIRED TO RENEW WITH BLS ALL NEW HIRES EFFECTIVE THIS SAME DATE ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE BLS WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF HIRED OR TRANSFER.

EXPERIENCE: PRIOR EXPERIENCE PREFEED, BUT NOT REQUIRED. KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY REQUIRED; KNOWLEDGE OF LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEM UTILIZATION MUST BE ACQUIRED AFTER 3 MONTHS ON THE JOB TRAINING. PROFICIENCY IN CLINICAL APPLICATIONS PREFEED AT TIME OF HIRED; INCUMMETS WITHIN POSITION WILL BE TRAINED APPROPRIATELY AND THEN SKILL WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION WITHIN 30-60 DAYS FROM DATE OF HIRED.

Performance Expectations

MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO DISTINGUISH COLORS. DEMONSTRATES THE ABILITY TO PERFORM THE DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES AS LISTED ON THE ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION TOOL. STRICT COMPLIANCE WITH LABORATORY FRAUD AND ABUSE POLICIES AND REQUIREMENTS IS AN EMPLOYMENT CONDITION.

Work Environment

POTENTIAL FOR EXPOSURE TO THE HAZARDS AND RISK OF THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING EXPOSURE TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE, BLOOD-BORN PATHOGENS, HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES, AND POTENTIAL INJURY. THIS POSITION DEMANDS INCREASED AMOUNTS OF STANDING, BENDING AND MANUAL MANIPULATION, AS WELL AS SOME LIGHT LIFTING. THE DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION TOOL LISTS THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION. CORE COMPETENCIES WILL BE ASSESSED PRIMAIRILY TO THE FOLLOWING PATIENT POPULATION(S) SERVED (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF NEWBORN(S)): ALL DIAGNOSES/CONDITIONS OF PATIENTS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL.
