Lab Assistant (FT, 3:30pm - 12am) - Center City

*Must be able to train on dayshift before moving to evening shift*

The Laboratory Assistant supports lab operations by processing and handling patient specimens for diagnostic testing in an accurate and timely manner following established protocols. Responsibilities include receiving, centrifuging, storing, and transporting/distributing samples to maintain sample integrity. The Lab Assistant also provides customer service to patients, physicians, and nursing staff, offering instructions and assistance regarding laboratory testing results. Basic laboratory techniques and testing in accordance with CLIA requirements may be performed.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

1. Interact professionally with co-workers, visitors, and staff, reflecting Jefferson's values.
2. Collaborate with laboratory and nursing staff to ensure proper specimen collection, labeling, and patient identification, including communication about patient refusals and language barriers.
3. Ensure proper identification and labeling of blood samples according to department policies.
4. Maintain an efficient flow of specimens to technical departments for analysis.
5. Review lab requisitions for accuracy, completeness, and medical necessity, and route specimens appropriately.
6. Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and plating, and transport/store specimens for future testing.
7. Assist with patient registration as per hospital policy.
8. Coordinate the loading of patient samples on automation lines to ensure timely processing, as required.
9. Perform other lab assistance duties as assigned, including phlebotomy and training other Lab Assistants.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience: 1-2 years of previous laboratory experience preferred. Prior lab assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at certain locations.
