Job Description

Accepts incoming specimens for the Accessioning area. Verifies receipt of specimens, correctly identifies specimens, labels, and prepares samples for testing. Registers patients, orders tests for predefined patient types, and performs related clerical duties including typing, basic computer functions, filing, and receptionist duties. May order and receive laboratory supplies and maintain stock levels.

Job Responsibilities
  1. Verifies receipt of specimens:
    1. Ensures each specimen matches its label and collection date.
    2. Verifies data on the specimen label matches the laboratory computer system.
    3. Enters verified specimen receipt into the computer system.
  2. Handles specimens appropriately:
    1. Uses proper handling techniques for all specimens.
    2. Centifuges specimens requiring it, ensuring balance, correct speed, time, and temperature.
    3. Separates serum from cells carefully.
  3. Identifies and labels aliquots:
    1. Labels by specimen number, name, date, test, and precautions.
    2. Maintains a clean work area and organizes workload efficiently.
  4. Delivers specimens:
    1. Transfers specimens to appropriate testing areas timely with correct labels.
  5. Handles test results:
    1. Picks up and delivers computer printouts of patient test results.
  6. Transports specimens from hospital areas:
    1. Verifies specimen identification upon receipt.
    2. Notifies staff of discrepancies.
  7. Answers laboratory inquiries:
    1. Provides status updates on lab tests and results as appropriate.
  8. Infection Control:
    1. Uses protective barriers and PPE correctly.
    2. Follows proper disposal procedures for hazardous materials.
    3. Utilizes injury prevention techniques and engineering controls.
  9. Maintains supplies: Orders and receives laboratory supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels.
  10. Performs related duties as required.

Job Qualifications
