Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will adhere to CLIA guidelines and California Business and Professions Codes (bpc: 1212, 1269). Unlicensed laboratory personnel (“aides”) are not permitted to read, record, result, verify, or interpret laboratory tests, perform tests involving quantitative measurements or mathematical calculations, calibrate instruments, or review quality control results. They must work under the supervision of a CLS or other licensed professional during analytical testing.

The Laboratory Assistant’s duties include:

  1. Performing computer entry, filing, telephone communication, and clerical duties.
  2. Greeting patients and visitors politely and professionally.
  3. Demonstrating good communication skills and knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
  4. Possessing adequate phlebotomy skills and familiarity with specimen collection equipment for all age groups.
  5. Processing specimens from pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
  6. Preparing specimens for reference laboratories.
  7. Stocking and ordering supplies.
  8. Maintaining cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas.
  9. Processing specimens on laboratory instruments per established procedures.
  10. With proper training, performing instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control, primary culture inoculations, slide staining, and subculturing.
  11. Performing additional tasks as assigned by the department manager/director, such as mail, fax, phone calls, and interdepartmental deliveries.
  12. Assisting in Pathology with training and evaluation.
  13. Performing runner duties.
Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Training

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Minimum 1-year clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  3. State certification as CPT I or CPT II if required by the state.
  4. Current BCLS (AHA) certification upon hire and maintained current is preferred.
