Responsibilities

The Laboratory Assistant will follow guidelines set by CLIA and the California Business and Professions Codes (bpc: 1212, 1269). Unlicensed laboratory personnel (aides) may not read, record, result, verify, or interpret laboratory tests. They may not perform tests involving quantitative measurements, mathematical calculations for test results, instrument calibration, or review quality control results unless supervised by a licensed professional. The responsibilities include:

  1. Performing computer entry, filing, telephone communication, and clerical duties.
  2. Demonstrating good telephone etiquette and greeting patients and visitors politely.
  3. Possessing good communication skills.
  4. Having adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
  5. Demonstrating proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen collection from patients of all ages.
  6. Processing specimens for pathology, microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank.
  7. Preparing specimens for reference laboratories.
  8. Stocking and ordering routine supplies.
  9. Maintaining cleanliness in storage areas, trays, centrifuges, and collection areas.
  10. Processing or preparing specimens for laboratory instruments following established procedures.
  11. With proper training, performing instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control, primary culture inoculations, slide staining, and subculturing.
  12. Performing additional tasks as assigned by the department manager/director, including monitoring, mailing, faxing, answering phones, and interdepartmental deliveries.
  13. Assisting in Pathology with training and evaluation.
  14. Performing runner duties.
Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • State certification as CPT I or CPT II if required in the state.
  • Current BCLS (AHA) certification upon hire and maintained preferred.
