Position Summary
The laboratory administrative and general supervisor directs the day-to-day operation of the laboratory's front-line and pre-analytic functions and provides general supervision of testing personnel and result reporting. The position oversees reception, phlebotomy, specimen processing, laboratory workflows, staff training, and competency assessment, and ensures coverage across those areas. All medical technicians, phlebotomists, medical laboratory assistants, and laboratory receptionists report to this position. The supervisor works alongside the Technical Supervisor and under the direction of the Laboratory Director.
Essential Duties and Supervisory Responsibilities
- Oversee daily workflow for reception, phlebotomy, specimen processing and accessioning, and result reporting, and adjust staffing and assignments to meet turnaround and coverage needs.
- Provide general supervision of testing personnel and reporting of results. In the absence of the director and technical supervisor, ensure the proper performance of laboratory procedures and reporting of results, consistent with the general supervisor role.
- Build staff schedules across reception, phlebotomy, and processing, and provide hands-on shift coverage as needed.
- Direct onboarding, training, and continuing competency assessment for direct-report staff, and maintain competency and training records on the required schedule, including at onboarding, at six months during the first year, and annually thereafter, consistent with CLIA competency requirements.
- Monitor pre-analytic quality, including specimen acceptability, labeling, collection technique, and processing accuracy, and address recurring issues through coaching and corrective action.
- Manage timekeeping, attendance, performance feedback, and personnel documentation for direct reports, and take part in hiring and disciplinary decisions with laboratory management and human resources.
- Maintain and update procedures for reception, phlebotomy, and processing, and confirm that staff follow current versions.
- Track and help resolve service issues, patient and provider concerns, and workflow bottlenecks in the pre-analytic area.
- Coordinate supply and consumable ordering for the front-line areas, and monitor par levels.
- Support proficiency testing logistics and specimen handling for the areas within scope.
- Reinforce safety, infection control, and confidentiality requirements, and complete incident documentation as needed.
Education, Certification, and Licensure
- Qualifies a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist with at least five years of clinical laboratory experience.
- Current certification appropriate to the credential held, for example MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP), or an equivalent certification from another recognized certifying body
- Meets the CLIA general supervisor qualifications for high complexity testing under 42 CFR 493.1461. Under that standard, an individual with an associate degree in a laboratory science and at least two years of high complexity testing experience, or a bachelor's degree in a relevant science and at least one year of high complexity testing experience, qualifies as a general supervisor. The experience levels above meet or exceed these federal minimums.
- Current Florida clinical laboratory personnel license appropriate to the role. Florida licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Supervisor requires qualification at the technologist level together with additional supervisory experience under Rule 64B3-5.002, Florida Administrative Code. The specific credential and licensure path will be confirmed with the selected candidate.
Experience
At least five years of clinical laboratory experience as a medical technologist or medical laboratory scientist, including experience in phlebotomy and pre-analytic operations. Prior lead or supervisory experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of pre-analytic laboratory operations, phlebotomy, and specimen processing.
- Familiarity with CLIA, COLA and accreditation requirements for personnel, competency, and quality.
- Ability to build schedules, balance coverage, and lead a front-line team.
- Clear communication and coaching skills, and sound judgment in personnel matters.
- Comfort with a laboratory information system, scheduling and timekeeping tools, and spreadsheets.
- Ability to stay organized and composed during high-volume periods and staffing gaps.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed in a clinical laboratory and patient service setting. The role involves extended periods of standing and sitting, repetitive hand and wrist motion, and frequent use of a computer and laboratory instruments. The employee handles blood and other potentially infectious materials and works around chemical reagents, and must follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee follows all applicable CLIA and COLA requirements, laboratory accreditation standards, HIPAA privacy and security requirements, OSHA and bloodborne pathogen requirements, and White-Wilson policies and procedures. A scheduled shift within the 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. window, for example 7:00 to 4:00, 8:00 to 5:00, or 9:00 to 6:00, Monday through Friday. Hours are adjusted as needed to provide shift coverage and meet operational needs.
