Overview

The Autonomous Specialist is responsible for operating and evaluating a self-driving vehicle in autonomous mode, including collecting data and providing feedback, and offering ride‑hail service to the general public.

Work Schedule

Shift assignments are determined based on business and operational needs specific to the Los Angeles market. Available shifts include 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m., with corresponding schedules of Wednesday–Sunday, Thursday–Monday, Friday–Tuesday, or Saturday–Wednesday. Final shift assignments will be determined according to client requirements and operational priorities and may be adjusted as needed to support business demands.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain Transdev’s high standard of safety, inside and outside of the vehicle.
• Consistently demonstrate situational awareness, an understanding of the technology in your care, and a willingness to constantly adjust to changes in the environment.
• Act as the deputy for technology by communicating courteously with management, engineers, and the public.
• Respond quickly to changing and potentially high‑pressure environments.
• Work mostly individually but also in small groups of 2‑10 people.
• Operate a vehicle 6‑8 hours a day, up to 5 days a week.
• Follow established diagnostic guides to troubleshoot driver support modules, including mobile devices, laptops, and other work devices.
• Provide rides in the autonomous vehicle to the general public.
• Monitor multiple software systems with constant focus.
• Provide concise, clear, and accurate verbal and written feedback regarding the vehicle’s operations.
• Manage the vehicle’s key security process.
• Complete daily reports and document procedures and tests.
• Interact with members of the public in a polite and professional manner and assist in educating them on self‑driving technology when necessary.
• Operate autonomous vehicles on both defined and undefined routes, including a variety of environmental conditions.
• Operate onboard data collection systems.
• Comfortable riding as a passenger in an autonomous vehicle where the driver may have little control over the vehicle’s operations.
• Safely operate a non‑autonomous vehicle while monitoring the location of a driverless vehicle(s) during vehicle recovery operations.
• Responsible for the safe recovery of the autonomous vehicle, including parking safely behind the driverless vehicle, setting up protection, disengaging the self‑driving car, and driving the car to a safe location.
• Apply safety procedures to any situation involving rescue of the self‑driving car.
• Oversee and ensure the security and inventory of disks, accounting for the beginning and end of shift, and ensuring the proper amount of disks needed throughout the day.
• Assist as a POC for client Security and Facilities staff for issues and repairs at remote sites.
• Exercise excellent customer service while assisting passengers of the driverless vehicle to disembark, board the rescue vehicle and safely drive passengers to their destination.
• Assist software progress by testing new features.
• Document recurring issues of new software and any potential bugs.
• Follow weekly release emails and bug reports to stay up to date.
• Work closely with Operations Supervisor to keep demo documentation accurate and up to date.
• Represent Client by showcasing self‑driving technology to Client's guests in a friendly, concise manner.
• Must be able to work assigned shift.
• All other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

• Minimum of 3 years of experience driving on public roads. Additional experience is preferred.
• High School Diploma or GED required. Four‑year college degree (preferred) in a related field like industrial or applied sciences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to parallel park with minimal assistance.
• Proficiency with a laptop computer and GSuite apps (Gmail, Hangouts, Drive, Sheets, Docs).
• Proficiency with using a touchscreen smartphone (Android preferred).
• Typing speed of at least 40 adjusted words per minute.
• Good attention to detail and the ability to quickly and concisely describe thoughts.
• Capable of responding quickly and simultaneously to multiple scenarios.
• Adapt quickly to new and developing technology.
• Cross‑functional verbal and written communication and issue escalation.
• Must be able to multitask multiple technologies, including communications devices and vehicle status systems.
• Must be able to work specific shifts, including early mornings, evenings, overnights and/or weekends, as well as travel for up to one month; occasionally may be required to work overtime and be recalled for peak operational demand.
• Must be able to perform shift from a compact crossover vehicle; periodically exposed to the elements and outdoors.
• Travel up to 20% of the time.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Self‑motivated and demonstrate good judgment in fast‑paced, high‑stress environments.

Physical Requirements

• Routine and repetitive standing, walking, and long periods of sitting.
• Use of extremities to include hands/fingers/grip, handling, hearing, and speaking; climbing stairs and/or ladders.
• May be required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Routinely and repetitively lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.
• Close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Work may require exposure to inclement weather and/or extreme environments.
• May need to operate alternative modes of transportation such as a bicycle or scooter.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

• Must be 21 years old.
• Driving record: no more than 1 point on the California driving record or one non‑major moving violation in the preceding three years.
• Proficiency with a laptop computer and GSuite apps.
• No driver’s license suspension or revocation for DUI or drug related offenses in the past 10 years.
• Never been the at‑fault driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident that resulted in injury or death of any person.
• Must maintain a driving record that meets state AVT (Autonomous Vehicle Tester) and/or other applicable regulations and laws.
• Meet driver requirements, including driving record and criminal history under applicable regulations and laws in the state(s) in which the autonomous vehicle monitor will be working.
• All Transdev employees must satisfactorily complete a pre‑employment drug screen and background check. Safety‑Sensitive Positions will also be subject to a physical screening.
• Transdev reserves the right to perform ongoing background checks for all employees except in states where this is prohibited by state law.
• Employees must maintain an acceptable driving record suitable to being approved to drive as part of regular duties; records are monitored on an ongoing basis pursuant to local state law.
• Ability to qualify for an Autonomous Vehicle Tester (AVT) license where required.
• If based in the United States, applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. without restrictions for any employer at any time as required by USCIS.
