Job description

Our Mission: Keep Washington Safe and Working!
Our Values: Customer Focus, One L&I, Respect, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Learning and Growth, Reliability

Please Note: This opportunity is open to Labor & Industries employees only.

The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety, health, and security of Washington's workers. We help employers meet safety and health standards and inspect workplaces when alerted to hazards. As administrators of the state's workers' compensation system, we are similar to a large insurance company, providing medical and limited wage-replacement coverage to workers who suffer job-related injuries and illness. Our rules and enforcement programs also help ensure workers are paid what they are owed, that children's and teens' work hours are limited, and that consumers are protected from unsound business practices.

Insurance Services is the largest division within the agency and administers one of the premier workers’ compensation organizations in the nation serving over 3.8 million employees working for 260,000 employers.

Within Insurance Service as a part of the Employer Services area, the Washington Stay at Work (WSAW) adjudicator contributes to the economic wellbeing of the state by ensuring that timely wage and expense reimbursements are paid to State Fund employers who provide medically approved, light duty or transitional work for their injured workers.

The WSAW adjudicator is passionate about the customer experience. This is a journey level position that adjudicates employer reimbursement requests and determines employer eligibility based on criteria established in the Stay at Work (WSAW) statute, rules and policies.

Some of what you’ll do:

  1. Adjudicate to include calculation and payment of Stay at Work wage and expense reimbursements, and resolving an assigned workload of requests according to laws, policies and statutes specific to Stay at Work benefits.
  2. Respond to difficult, stressful and sensitive situations, effectively communicating unpleasant options, calming and assisting customers.
  3. Describe the factors considered in making a decision and their relative importance. Identify and consider alternatives before making a decision.
  4. Use customer satisfaction as a key measure, provide products and services that consistently meet or exceed the needs and expectations of customers.
  5. Act as a department liaison to internal customers for the Stay at Work program.
  6. Is a subject matter expert for employers on how to access the WSAW program and the benefits specific to that program.
  7. And much more!

Required:

  • Successful completion of the Workers’ Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program.
  • Three years of experience working with insurance claims, claims/insurance adjusting, claims investigations, or paramedical occupations.

AND

  • A Bachelor’s degree.

AND

  • One year of experience in adjudicating workers’ or crime victims’ compensation insurance claims, or adjudication of time loss payments.

OR

  • Equivalent education/experience.

Desired:

  • Conflict Management: Skillfully and calmly handle confrontation. Successfully communicate unpleasant options, remain calm and assist customers.
  • Flexible: Deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Receptive to new ideas, adapt to new situations and changing conditions. Help others to overcome resistance to change. Work effectively in a diverse work environment.
  • Initiative: Motivate and a self-starter. Produce accurate and timely work with minimal supervision.
  • Learning Orientation: Self-initiative to develop, upgrade, or adjust knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Mentoring: Collaborate with others to provide information, instruction, feedback, and encouragement to maximize their success.
  • Multi-tasking: Prioritize and perform multiple tasks in the same timeframe, handle interruptions and return to incomplete tasks. Meet productivity standards, deadlines and work schedules, efficient in the use of resources, work time, and equipment.
  • Process Improvement: Use project management (Lean) and problem-solving methods to improve processes.
  • Workers’ Compensation: Administer benefits using Washington’s workers’ compensation laws, (Revised Code of Washington Title 51), Medical Aid Rules (Washington Administrative Code 296), Claims Administration Policies and Procedures, and case law.
