Job description

Splitwise is looking for a full-time KYC Analyst to expand our KYC team! We're eager to find folks who enjoy solving complex problems, digging into details, and making thoughtful, well-reasoned decisions.

At Splitwise, the KYC team supports Splitwise Pay by verifying customer identities, preventing fraud, and following Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures. We balance a smooth customer onboarding experience with the importance of identifying and mitigating risk. Our analysts investigate cases, make decisions based on available information and documentation, and look for ways to improve our processes.

We believe that small groups of dedicated people can do great work AND maintain an excellent work-life balance at the same time. ("It's a marathon, not a sprint," we often say.) We have a small hybrid HQ in Providence, RI, but most of us work remotely, with 2-3 large off-site gatherings each year. We reward high levels of ownership and believe that psychological safety helps people ask questions, work through challenges, and do their best work.

The KYC team is part of Business Operations and works closely with Customer Support and other teams to complete investigations and improve the customer experience. This position reports to the KYC Manager, Dan. Full-time analysts must be online and available from 10am-5pm ET on weekdays. We're excited to welcome someone who wants to contribute to our small, collaborative team!

Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor employment visas or work authorizations for this role.

What you'll actually do at Splitwise:
  • Review customer applications, identity documents, and third-party verification results to make informed onboarding decisions
  • Learn and follow KYC and AML procedures, applying established policies consistently while recognizing when additional investigation is needed
  • Analyze customer information and activity to identify potential fraud, suspicious behavior, and patterns across cases
  • Evaluate complex or ambiguous cases, weigh conflicting evidence, and elevate potential risks when appropriate
  • Maintain accurate case notes that clearly document findings, actions taken, decisions, and supporting rationale
  • Communicate with customers to request documentation, clarify discrepancies, and help them complete verification
  • Collaborate with Customer Support, Business Operations, and other colleagues to resolve issues while balancing risk and user experience
  • Identify recurring problems and opportunities to improve review guidelines, workflows, and fraud prevention practices; contribute to team projects beyond the daily queue
Things about you:
  • You treat others with empathy and respect, and help create an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions
  • You communicate clearly with customers and coworkers, and can explain and defend your reasoning while considering other perspectives
  • You have strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the patience to work through complicated information
  • You can follow complex rules, compare information from multiple sources, and make logical decisions even when the answer isn't obvious
  • You are curious about patterns and underlying causes, and can distinguish meaningful signals from less important details
  • You take ownership of your work, manage competing priorities, ask useful questions, and adjust your thinking when new evidence emerges
  • We value but do not require experience with: KYC/AML, fraud prevention, financial services, customer support, data analysis, or Splitwise's product
Things you'll learn:
  • How to conduct KYC and AML reviews and support compliance with financial regulations
  • How the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and related requirements shape customer onboarding
  • How to investigate identity discrepancies, potential fraud, and suspicious activity
  • How to weigh evidence and make defensible decisions in ambiguous cases
  • How to recognize patterns, assess risk, and prioritize important issues
  • How to improve review workflows while protecting the customer experience
  • How a small, transparent, customer-focused start-up operates
Compensation range:

-$57,000/yr base cash compensation

  • Equity/stock options
  • Top-tier health care (covered 100% for you, 50% for dependents)
  • Dental and Vision insurance
  • Unlimited/flexible PTO (most employees take 4-6 weeks)
  • Paid parental leave (12+ weeks)
  • 401k with match
  • Flexible hours (with meeting hours generally from 10am-5pm ET)
  • Professional development budget for conferences or other paid resources, in consultation with your manager
  • Periodic annual retreats and face-to-face visits with colleagues
  • Support for in-office, co-working, or remote work, each with related benefits to do your best work
