Woodland Public Schools - Bus Driver

Thank you for your interest in a possible career transporting students for the KWRL Transportation Cooperative. The KWRL Transportation Cooperative is a joint venture of Kalama, Woodland, Ridgefield and La Center School Districts working together to transport student in as safe and efficient method as possible. As a substitute bus driver you will have flexibility in what assignments you accept. All applications are considered and reviewed. The most qualified and competitive applicant(s) that possess directly related experience and expertise, training, and education may be invited to participate in the interview/selection process. As part of the selection process, the District conducts confidential reference checks to include former and present employers and also requires a criminal background investigation. Unfortunately, due to the number of applications received, not all applicants will receive an interview.

Benefits: If you are hired as a route driver (not a sub) the position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D and LTD through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB) and retirement through the WA State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). $1500 signing bonus for applicants without CDL and $3000 for applicants with CDL (paid after six months of duty)

Upon hire, applicants are given the option of taking an available route or the option of working as a substitute driver. (substitute drivers are not eligible for benefits)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
  • Clean the bus as scheduled and/or required
  • Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
  • Advise the appropriate personnel of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Pick up and deliver students as per a set schedule
  • Take attendance on the school bus
  • Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers
  • Maintain order and discipline on the School bus
  • Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary problems
  • Attend required training meetings
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Clean driving record (no more than two speeding violations in the last five years, and no criminal traffic violations)

The qualification process will require the following

  • Fingerprinting for FBI and WSP background check (out of pocket expense will be reimbursed)
  • Drug and Alcohol testing (pre-employment and DOT random testing)
  • Five year moving violation report detailing moving violations
  • Employment drug and alcohol testing history from previous employers
  • Physical examination and certification (out of pocket expense will be reimbursed)
  • First-Aid training
  • DOL/CDL fees (out of pocket expense will be reimbursed)

KWRL and Washington State requirements

  • Is physically able to maneuver and control a school bus under all driving conditions.
  • Is physically able to use all controls and equipment found on a state minimum specified school bus to include all safety apparatus to include installation of snow chains in emergency weather conditions.
  • Is physically able to perform daily routine school bus vehicle inspections.
  • Has sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to provide assistance to students in evacuating the bus. The driver must be able to move from a seated position in an 84 passenger bus, to the emergency door, open the emergency door and exit the bus through the emergency door in less than twenty-five seconds.
  • Hold and maintain a valid medical examiners certificate.
  • Hold and maintain a valid first-aid card
  • Repetitive motions will include, but are not limited to:
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Entry and exit of the bus
  • Arm motions:
  • Swinging hammer or tire thumper
  • Pushing and pulling levers, valves, buttons and switches
  • Lifting up to 35 pounds
  • Opening doors and hoods
  • Reaching overhead to open or close emergency hatches
  • Steering
  • Leg motions:
  • Pushing and pumping foot pedals
  • Steps to enter and exit bus
  • Jumping from emergency exit
  • Walking in and around bus
  • Crouching and kneeling (snow chain installation)

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 100 lbs. The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being, or work output of other people.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

If you are hired for this position, you will be required to pay for a background check, unless you have completed the background check in the past two years, and it is on file with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
