Job description

Kitchen Supervisor

ASH People LLC Venice, California, United States

About this position

ASH Hotels designs, develops, owns and operates a very special collection of properties. In our world, a hotel is much more than a destination to meet, dine, or sleep. Rather, it is a dynamic site of imagery and emotions, interactions and sensations manifesting within the walls of a beautifully restored local legend – a living movie set. An ASH hotel is a connection to the past and a beacon for the future, layered in nuanced storytelling that invites exploration time and again.

Opening Fall 2026, our jewel box of a hotel stands on the iconic Venice Beach boardwalk, a lively stretch of California culture where a seemingly endless beach meets the dreams and schemes of this great city. Venice, CA was born from a grand vision, the ancient and hauntingly beautiful most serene republic reborn for pleasure on the wild pacific coast, where the spirit of spectacle, entertainment, and countercultural pursuits is as palpable as the salty air.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Kitchen Supervisor to help navigate the day-to-day operation of the hotel cafe’s back of house, supporting the culinary team across breakfast, lunch, and dinner service. This hands-on role oversees kitchen staff, food preparation standards, and cost controls, ensuring every dish that leaves the kitchen reflects the quality and character of our hotel.

The ideal Kitchen Supervisor is a disciplined, detail-oriented leader who knows their way around a kitchen. They bring strong technical skill and a genuine passion for food, coupled with the operational rigor to manage food costs, labor, and inventory without ever compromising on quality or consistency. Equally adept at running the line during a busy dinner rush, training a new cook on knife skills, and reviewing a weekly food cost report, this person moves fluidly between hands-on cooking and kitchen supervision. They lead by example, hold the team accountable to high standards of cleanliness and craftsmanship, and take real pride in the kitchen they run.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily back of house operations across all meal periods, ensuring food is prepared consistently, safely, and to recipe and plating standards
  • Support the cafe and hotel leadership team in training, scheduling, and supervising line cooks, prep cooks, dishwashers, and other kitchen staff
  • Ensure kitchen staff maintain required Food Handler certifications and comply with all food safety protocols
  • Assist with menu development, recipe standardization, and execution of daily and seasonal specials
  • Monitor and control food cost, portioning, and waste; assist in tracking actual vs. budgeted food cost and identifying variances
  • Manage receiving, storage, rotation, and inventory of food product; place orders with purveyors as needed and maintain strong supplier relationships
  • Ensure kitchen and storage areas meet health department standards and are compliant for random inspection
  • Oversee proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of kitchen equipment; communicate maintenance needs to the Maintenance Manager promptly
  • Enforce sanitation protocols, HACCP procedures, and consistent food safety practices across all shifts
  • Coordinate with the front of house team to ensure smooth ticket times, accurate orders, and a seamless guest experience
  • Step in as line cook or expo as needed to support service during peak periods or staff shortages
  • Develop and enforce kitchen conduct expectations, uniform standards, and a culture of respect and accountability
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of back of house / culinary experience, preferably in a full-service restaurant or hotel F&B setting, with at least 1 year in a lead or supervisory capacity
  • Demonstrated experience working multiple stations and dayparts (breakfast through dinner)
  • Strong knife skills and working knowledge of classic culinary techniques
  • Solid understanding of food cost controls, portioning, and inventory management
  • Experience with kitchen prep systems, recipe costing, and basic reporting
  • Food Handler certification required, ServSafe Manager certification preferred, or ability to obtain promptly
  • Ability to lead and motivate a small, close-knit kitchen team under pressure
  • Flexible availability, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Passion for food, hospitality, and consistent culinary execution
