Austin Sunshine Camps seeks a Kitchen Manager for its Spring Break Camp in Austin, TX. You will lead high-volume food service, manage staff, budget, and dietary accommodations to provide safe and nutritious meals for campers and staff throughout the session.

Optional onsite housing is available; you will coordinate with Camp Brain for dietary needs and ensure compliance with ACA standards and local health codes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of culinary experience or currently a culinary arts student.
• Food Manager Certification required or obtainable before training.
• Ability to supervise others and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Knowledge of food health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily preparation and service for three meals plus snacks, ensuring quality and safety.
• Manage food and supplies purchasing within budget and control inventory.
• Identify dietary needs and design safe meal alternatives for campers with allergies or restrictions.
• Supervise Kitchen Assistant, CITs, and campers in kitchen duties; maintain a positive, clean environment.
• Ensure compliance with Texas Health Code, ACA standards, and local inspection requirements.

Kitchen Manager for Spring Break Camp in Austin, TX

About Austin Sunshine Camps (ASC):

The mission of ASC is to provide the magic of overnight camp without the barrier of cost. We envision a world where all children have a place to grow, connect and explore. Since 1928, ASC has provided free, fun-filled overnight summer camp programs for children by partnering with families who face barriers to accessing such programs.

ASC's Overnight Summer Camp is our flagship program and is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), which represents the industry’s highest standard. Each summer, we provide four sessions of overnight summer camp to 500-600 children ages eight to 15. Our eight to 11-year-olds attend our Zilker Camp in Zilker Park and our 12 to 15-year-olds attend our Lake Travis Camp in Marble Falls. For 10 days and nine nights, they swim, canoe, hike, learn new skills, create crafts, make music, and much more.

During the school year, we engage with our camper families, providing a variety of programming and events that allow them to feel a part of the larger ASC family as well. By deepening the relationship with our campers’ families throughout the year, we significantly increase the likelihood that campers will return year-after-year, increasing the opportunity to create lasting impact on the child’s life, education, and future career.

The Commitment:

Camp runs March 14, 2027- March 20, 2027. Note that optional housing is provided for Kitchen Manager candidates that prefer to live onsite.

• Paid Staff Training will take place : March 5-7

Our Locations

• Lake Travis (Ages 12-15): A classic hill country setup in the Turkey Bend Recreation Area. Think lake swimming, high ropes courses, and sunset sports.
• Zilker Lodge (Ages 8-11): Located in the heart of central Austin. You'll spend your days canoeing Lady Bird Lake, hiking the Greenbelt, and exploring Zilker Park.

About the Role: Kitchen Manager

As the Kitchen Manager, you will lead our food service operations, ensuring every camper, staff member, and volunteer receives safe, nutritious, and delicious meals throughout the summer.

We are seeking a high-energy, detail-oriented leader with experience in high-volume meal preparation, kitchen staff management, budget oversight, and youth nutrition.

• Culinary Leadership & Operations: Oversee daily preparation and service for three meals plus snacks, maintaining smooth kitchen workflows, exceptional quality, and high safety standards.
• Budgeting & Inventory Management: Manage food and supply purchasing within budget, oversee deliveries, maintain strict inventory controls, and submit expense tracking to the Camp Director.
• Dietary Accommodations & Parent Communication: Utilize CampBrain reports to identify dietary needs, consult directly with guardians during drop-off, and design safe, custom meal alternatives for campers with allergies or restrictions.
• Team Management & Mentorship: Supervise and support the Kitchen Assistant, Counselors-in-Training (CITs), and campers in kitchen duties, fostering a positive, clean, and cooperative environment.
• Compliance & Inspection Readiness: Ensure full adherence to Texas Health Code, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, and local inspection requirements.

Requirements:

• You are 21 years old or older
• You have a minimum of 2 years of culinary experience or are a culinary arts student
• You have a Food Managers Certification, or you can obtain one before training
• You have an in-depth knowledge of food health and safety regulations
• You have the ability to work well with and supervise others
• You are able to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stress well
• You have excellent organizational and time management skills
• You have the ability to pass a national criminal background check
• $1,115.36 for the camp session + paid training
• Full Room & Board: Free lodging and all meals/snacks provided while camp is in session.
