Job summary

University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is hiring a part-time Kitchen Cleaner responsible for washing patient trays, pots, and pans and maintaining a clean kitchen environment. The role requires adherence to cleaning schedules and safety guidelines, with logs for temperatures and chemical usage.

The position is 28 hours per week, primarily Friday-Saturday 10:30 am–7:00 pm and Sunday–Monday 4:30 pm–10:30 pm, onsite at Michigan Medicine.

Qualifications

  • Experience cleaning and operating institutional cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, reach, stand up to 8 hours, and push/pull up to 35 pounds.
  • Excellent reading comprehension of English and ability to follow written instructions and chemical labels.
  • Ability to provide good customer service, work well in a team or independently.

Responsibilities

  • Wash pots and pans and record water temperature and sanitizing pH in the log.
  • Sweep and mop floors, clean sinks, drains, mats, and kitchen equipment.
  • Empty garbage and manage containers.
  • Assist with Warewash area when needed.
  • Follow the Master Cleaning schedule and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Responsibilities*
  • Wash pots and pans, including operating the three-compartment sink, Power Soak, and rack washer. Record water temperature and sanitizing pH levels accurately in the log as assigned.
  • Sweep and mop kitchen floors, clean hand wash sinks, floor drains, floor mats, and various kitchen equipment (i.e., kettles, hoods, ovens, steamers, etc.).
  • Empty and remove garbage in a timely manner, and clean garbage containers as needed.
  • Assist with the Warewash area if needed.
  • Clean assigned areas per Master Cleaning schedule, record duties in log, and complete additional tasks as assigned.
  • Be flexible with work schedules, job tasks, and job changes. This includes but is not limited to working holidays and picking up additional duties when a coworker is absent.
  • Keep work equipment cleaned and sanitized as assigned, including maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Complete special project cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Be able to multitask and work at a fast pace.
Required Qualifications*
  • Experience cleaning and operating institutional cleaning equipment including, but not limited to, a rack washer, three-compartment sink, Power Soak equipment, and/or other.
  • Experience performing physical job tasks safely. This includes but is not limited to lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, reaching, standing (up to 8 hours), and pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to read English with comprehension, listen effectively, speak and write clearly, and accurately follow written instructions, including job routines, directions, and precautions on chemical product labels.
  • Ability to perform excellent customer service. This includes, but is not limited to, demonstrating respect for coworkers, working effectively on a team, as well as working independently with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to multitask and work at a fast pace.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedules, job tasks, and job changes.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

This position is primarily responsible for washing patient trays, pots, and pans and cleaning around the kitchen.
This is a 28-hour position working Friday- Saturday, 10:30 am-7:00 p.m., and Sunday- Monday, 4:30p-10:30 p.m.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
