Salary Range: $18.00 To $20.00 Hourly

Mendocino Railway is the owner/operator of passenger and freight railroads including the California Western Railroad (CWR) / Skunk Trainand theRiver Fox Train.The world-famous Skunk Train is a standard gauge passenger railroad that was founded in 1885, and operates 40 miles between Fort Bragg and Willits, in Mendocino County, California.

The Skunk Trainis looking for a dependable, friendly, and guest-focused individual to join the crew as a Kitchen Cashier. This role will greet guests, accurately process food and beverage orders and payments, maintain an organized and clean service area, and help ensure a positive guest experience. This position operates in a fast-paced food service and commercial kitchen environment. Team members are expected to maintain professionalism, cleanliness, food safety, and excellent customer service standards at all times.

This is a part-time position and includes working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)
  • Greet guests in a friendly and professional manner and provide excellent customer service.
  • Accurately take and enter food and beverage orders into the point-of-sale (POS) system.
  • Process credit card transactions accurately.
  • Maintain accountability for payments and report discrepancies to management.
  • Answer guest questions regarding menu items, pricing, ingredients, and available food and beverage options.
  • Communicate guest orders clearly and accurately to kitchen staff.
  • Verify orders for accuracy and completeness before providing them to guests.
  • Assist with packaging, organizing, and distributing food orders.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of service areas.
  • Restock utensils, napkins, condiments, beverages, and other service supplies as needed.
  • Assist with basic food preparation, stocking, and kitchen support duties as assigned.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, and proper food-handling procedures at all times.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including preparing and cleaning the cashier/service area.
  • Support kitchen staff and management during high-volume service periods.
  • Assist with special events and other food service operations as needed.
  • Respond professionally to guest questions or concerns and elevate issues to management when appropriate.
  • Follow all applicable health and safety laws, regulations, standards, and company policies.
  • Communicate effectively with guests, crew members and supervisors to ensure seamless service.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Previous cashier, restaurant, food service, retail, or customer service experience preferred.
  • Valid Food Handler Certification preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Experience operating a POS system preferred.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accurately process transactions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in the English language with ability to communicate clearly and professionally with guests and coworkers.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong work ethic, dependability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to multitask effectively during busy service periods.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform the physical requirements of the position.
  • Flexible availability, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and special events.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to assist with kitchen and food service duties as needed.
  • Pre‑employment drug screen (including cannabis) and criminal background check required prior to hiring.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and walk on uneven surfaces (train platforms, gravel, etc.).
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. safely.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, push, pull, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments and around moving rail equipment (with provided safety training).
  • Must be able to perform duties safely while on the tracks and a moving train.
