Job description

Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Kitchen Assistant plans, leads, and assists YMCA Camp Shady Brook’s Food Service operation so that campers and groups receive satisfying meals which coincide with YMCA’s nutritional guidelines for healthy living.

Responsibilities
  • Help develop and implement menus in line with nutritional guidelines for healthy living.
  • Help estimate needs, maintain inventory, order, receive, and store foodstuffs and supplies.
  • Provide and instill in staff the need for exemplary service to all participants and respond to participants' needs in a timely and polite manner.
  • Work with individual participants to accommodate any special dietary needs.
  • Work cooperatively with all program staff and directors to best meet the needs of all staff and participants.
  • Function as a general cook for meals and special events.
  • Implement the quality control program that provides all groups with the highest quality of meal service within the allocated budget.
  • Provide food and supplies for summer camp meals out of the dining hall (campouts/outpost programs).
  • Support the health and safety of the food service operation, including compliance with all Health Department and American Camp Association requirements; daily cleanliness of kitchen and dining hall, including storage areas and refrigeration units; food preparation and handling procedures; address safety concerns directly or with support from the Food Service Director.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain all past menus, temperature readings, and any other records required; provide all necessary paperwork for any government food/milk programs.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma preferred.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a catering or food service setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • ServSafe Certified; if not certified, must obtain certification.
  • Passionate belief in the cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people, and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations.
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification.
