Job Description

About the Role

The Managing Director of Talent will work closely with the Chief People Officer to lead talent strategy, professional development, and operations for regional team and school based hiring. We are looking for a forward-thinking leader to drive innovation in talent strategy and operations at scale. This role requires someone who can navigate complexity, foster growth, and build systems that go beyond recruitment to shape the long-term success of our schools.

This leader will play a critical role in designing and implementing best-in-class talent strategy and processes, leveraging technology and data to enhance efficiency, and ensuring we attract, develop, and retain top educators and leaders. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about leading change, developing high-performing teams, and optimizing talent processes to support our mission.

Who You'll Work With

You will report to the Chief People Officer and lead our Talent Team, which includes recruiters and talent development professionals.

You will frequently collaborate with our regional and school-based staff and leaders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and lead an innovative and holistic talent strategy that ensures we attract, develop, and retain diverse, mission-aligned, and high impact educators and leaders
  • Move beyond reactive recruiting for talent—analyze trends, identify root causes of turnover, and partner with school leaders to proactively address staffing challenges
  • Revamp talent systems and processes, leveraging technology to enhance operational efficiency while implementing scalable recruitment, hiring, and talent management strategies across our 18 schools

Learning & Development

  • Oversee the creation of development pathways for staff and support school leaders in fostering retention through meaningful career growth opportunities
  • Lead a team responsible for regional professional development activities, including trainings on equitable talent practices

Team Leadership & Relationship Management

  • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing Talent team to drive a best-in-class talent strategy
  • Engage deeply with school leaders and senior leadership, fostering buy-in and ensuring alignment between school-level needs and network goals

Note: This description is intended to describe the type of work being performed by a person assigned to this position. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required by the employee.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Passion for KIPP NYC's mission, vision, core values, and a commitment to high quality public education
  • A strong track record of leadership (15+ years) in talent
  • Experience (5+ years) leading teams—you develop, mentor, and inspire talent professionals to perform at their highest level
  • Experience developing and leading equitable hiring practices, leveraging best practices to attract and retain a workforce that reflects the diversity of our students
  • Strong operational expertise—you understand process efficiency, technology systems (ATS, HRIS, CRM), and how to optimize workflows
  • Innovative problem-solving skills—you bring fresh, bold ideas to reimagine talent strategy and management
  • A data-driven approach—you use analytics and insights to inform decision-making and drive measurable impact
  • Ability to clearly define strategic issues and make decisions in a timely fashion, even in the face of ambiguity and organizational change
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build consensus, problem-solve, and manage conflict among varied stakeholders in matrixed environments
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including active listening, writing, and presentation skills
