Job Description

Position Overview

The Controller is a detail-oriented, ambitious, and self-motivated individual reporting to the CFO. Responsible for daily accounting operations, monthly closings, and ensuring compliance with GAAP, the Controller will support a nearly $200M operating budget, expanding to nearly $300M by 2030. The role involves maintaining financial controls, managing internal and external reporting, and supervising a team of 9 staff members.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. General Accounting and Reporting

• Ensure compliance with accounting policies
• Maintain ledgers and prepare for audits
• Manage month-end close, financial statements, and cash flow forecasts
• Reconcile accounts regularly
• Oversee revenue cycle, accounts receivable, and billing processes
• Manage financial systems, including chart of accounts
• Oversee grants accounting and reporting

Financial Policies and Procedures

• Develop and implement policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Update the Fiscal Policies and Procedures Manual annually
• Ensure record retention and compliance

Audit, Tax, and Lender Compliance

• Coordinate tax filings and manage annual audits
• Support auditors during reviews
• Complete debt compliance reports

Banking

• Manage invested assets and bank reconciliations
• Handle interbank transfers and liaise with banking partners

Organizational and Team Leadership

• Lead and develop the accounting team
• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders
• Support change management initiatives
• Assist CFO with audit and finance documentation

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; CPA and/or MBA preferred
• 15+ years in accounting/finance, including audit coordination and ledger management
• Experience as Controller in organizations with $100M-$300M budgets
• Non-profit or educational sector experience preferred
• Proven grants management and compliance skills
• Strong leadership, communication, and software proficiency (Excel, Sage Intacct)

Additional Information

KIPP NYC offers a salary range of $185,000 - $210,000, along with comprehensive benefits including health coverage, generous time off, parental leave, and professional development opportunities. The role requires three days in-office in NYC with two days remote, based at our Midtown Manhattan location. Relocation outside NY may lead to employment review.
