Qualifications

• Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester hours) or obtain an associate’s degree (or higher).
• Ability to instruct reading, writing and mathematics; or reading readiness and math readiness as appropriate.
• Ability to communicate with students, staff and guardians in a professional manner.
• Excellent verbal and written expression using proper grammar and vocabulary.
• Exemplary work habits and strong interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Assists the classroom teacher in preparing the classroom or laboratory for instruction.
• Helps prepare and distribute lesson materials.
• Instructs students under supervision of the classroom teacher.
• Maintains individual student records when asked.
• Keeps the classroom neat, clean and orderly to provide work areas conducive to learning.
• Uses resources to support learning activities in the classroom, academy and community.
• Demonstrates exceptional classroom techniques including questioning, clarity of assignments, mutual respect, and group work.
• Works cooperatively with parents and guardians to build confidence in the classroom teacher.
• Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with others.
• Promotes responsible citizenship and a classroom atmosphere based on firm, fair and consistent practices.
• Shares responsibility for marketing the academy in the community.
• Participates in policy development affecting instruction and conditions of success.
• Conducts himself or herself according to professional, ethical principles.
