Job Description

PROGRAM: KidStart DEPARTMENT:

Summary: Under the guidance of the Head Cook, the Cook Assistant assists in serving nutritious meals and snacks in accordance with CACFP regulations and the Head Start Performance Standards. The Cook Assistant helps to provide meals to classrooms ready for family style meal service and suitable for the children's age and development. The Cook Assistant also helps with maintaining a safe and sanitary kitchen.

Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to applicable federal, state, local, and agency guidelines, policies, and regulations including but not limited to DOH regulations, CACFP guidelines, and Head Start Performance Standards
  • Prepares daily mealtime setups for family style service
  • Assists with portioning food for family style service
  • Helps deliver food to classrooms
  • Maintains awareness of special dietary needs
  • Assists with preparation of food as requested by Head Cook
  • Helps to maintain standards of safety and sanitation in food preparation and storage areas
  • Assists with receiving, marking, stocking and rotating foods as required
  • Maintains a high standard of personal hygiene
  • Substitutes for Cook in his/her absence
  • Maintains confidentiality and exercises sound judgment concerning the sharing of information
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Head Cook or supervisor

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Conducts self in a professional manner to promote the mission, philosophy, and policies of the agency
  • Participates in maintaining a healthy and safe environment
  • Participates in corporate compliance and quality Assurance activities as required
  • Attends meeting related to the job responsibilities

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standards for safe food handling and storage
  • Knowledge of and skill to properly operate standard kitchen equipment and to use cooking utensils for large scale food preparation
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to and interact appropriately with adults and children with different backgrounds and abilities
  • Ability to maintain focus in a fast-paced high-pressure environment
  • Strong organizational skills; makes efficient use of time and energy
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions and required procedures
  • Ability to perform basic math quickly and accurately

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to lift, carry, push and pull moderate weights
  • Physical ability to remain on feet for extended periods throughout workday
  • Physical stamina for continuous walking, bending, reaching over head, twisting and turning
  • Perception of speech and sounds in environment to ensure safety
  • Ability to distinguish differences in quality of flavors and/or odors
  • Manual dexterity to perform essential job functions efficiently and safely
  • Ability to maneuver safely in a cramped or confined space

Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to temperatures higher and/or lower than typical of work environment . Exposure to workplace hazards typical of kitchen environment including but not limited to knives, hot pans, boiling or very hot water, steam, spills, heavy containers, electrical appliances, mechanical appliances .

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current Food Workers Course Certificate preferred
  • Successful completion of Food Workers Course required within 6 months of hire
  • Experience in food service preferred
  • Valid NYS driver’s license with safe driving record per agency policy
  • Current physical examination and TB screen documentation upon hire
