Job summary

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in Indian Trail, NC is seeking a full-time animal care colleague to support a busy wildlife hospital. The role involves assisting with medical treatments, keeping accurate care records, triage and housing decisions, and supervising volunteers.

Must be able to work nights and weekends, handle a variety of species, and read medical notes. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and willingness to follow protocols are essential.

Qualifications

  • Must have veterinary experience (1 year required).
  • Must be committed to caring for wildlife and domestic animals including farm animals, domestic birds and fowl, exotics.
  • Must be willing to handle snakes.
  • Ability to read and follow directions.
  • Background check and preemployment drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and administering medical treatments under supervision of the manager.
  • Maintain complete and accurate animal care records.
  • Determine and provide appropriate triage/emergency care, housing/enclosures and diets including live and dead food items.
  • Clean and disinfect all areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment throughout the hospital and facility.
  • Inventory and maintain clinic/medical supplies.
  • Provide oversight, direction and training of volunteers on a daily basis.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for the animals.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend detailed animal care protocols and medical notes.
  • Ability to understand or learn basic medical terminology, avian physiology and anatomy.
  • Have excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Effectively communicate information on both an individual basis and group situations and have excellent interpersonal skills for interactions with volunteers, other employees.

Job description:

Night and weekends are required.


This is a high-volume facility with annual intakes can reach 10,000. We believe all life has value regardless of species. We have a very generous paid time off policy as well as sick time and bereavement leave. We also offer retirement benefits.


This candidate for this position must be committed to caring for a wide range of wildlife as well as domestic animals including farm animals, domestic birds and fowl, exotics. In addition we have a robust baby songbird program. Must be willing to handle snakes.


Ability to read and follow directions is a must.


Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office and data entry, preferably with an electronic patient records system (ex. WRMD, Raptor Med).

  • Excellent basic mathematical skills and the ability to accurately work with units of weight, volume and concentration.
