Job summary

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue in North Carolina seeks an experienced veterinary technician, preferably with wildlife experience, for night and weekend shifts. The role involves assisting with treatments, surgeries, and daily rehab for a wide range of wildlife and domestic animals, including birds, farm animals, exotics, and a daily songbird program. Strong reading, organizational, and communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 months of related full-time veterinary experience.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend detailed animal care protocols and medical notes.
  • Knowledge of avian physiology and anatomy.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with volunteers, staff, and the public.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office and data entry; experience with electronic patient records (WRMD).
  • Excellent math skills and ability to work with weights, volumes, and concentrations.
  • Background check and pre-employment drug screening required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with and administer medical treatments under supervision of veterinarian.
  • Assist with surgeries and monitor patients.
  • Give injections, gavage feeding, and subcutaneous fluids.
  • Maintain complete and accurate animal care records.
  • Provide triage, housing, and diet for diverse species including birds and exotics.
  • Clean and disinfect all areas to maintain a sanitary environment.
  • Inventory and maintain clinic/medical supplies.
  • Oversee and train volunteers on a daily basis.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and other centers.

Nights and weekend shifts only.

We are looking for an experienced veterinary technician preferably with wildlife experience. We offer generous paid time off policies with additional sick time and bereavement leaves as well as retirement benefits.

We will consider someone with a bird heavy background as well. This is a high volume facility with annual intakes reaching almost 10,000. We believe all life has value regardless of species.

This candidate for this position must be committed to caring for a wide range of wildlife as well as domestic animals including farm animals, domestic birds and fowl, exotics. In addition we have a robust baby songbird program that requires daily rehab care. Must be comfortable with snakes or willing to learn and not be afraid of animals.

Ability to read and follow directions is a must.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Assist with and administering medical treatments under supervision of veterinarian.
  • Assisting with surgeries and patient monitoring
  • Giving injections, doing gavage feeding and subqutaneos fluids.
  • Maintain complete and accurate animal care records.
  • Determine and provide appropriate triage/emergency care, housing/enclosures and diets including live and dead food items.
  • Clean and disinfect all areas as necessary to maintain a safe and sanitary environment throughout the hospital and facility.
  • Inventory and maintain clinic/medical supplies.
  • Provide oversight, direction and training of volunteers on a daily basis.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, to ensure a positive public image, enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for the animals.
  • Respond to inquiries from members of the public and other local rehabilitation centers.
Required qualifications
  • A minimum of 12 months of related full time employment with demonstrated education/experience/training.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend detailed animal care protocols and medical notes.
  • Ability to understand basic medical terminology, avian physiology and anatomy.
  • Have excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize work.
  • Effectively communicate information on both an individual basis and group situations and have excellent interpersonal skills for interactions with volunteers, other employees, governing agencies, outside members of the public and other rehabilitation centers.
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office and data entry, preferably with an electronic patient records system (ex. WRMD).
  • Excellent basic mathematical skills and the ability to accurately work with units of weight, volume and concentration.
  • This position requires a background check and preemployment drug screening
