Job summary

The Family Place is seeking an Animal Care Associate to join the shelter team in Dallas. You will provide daily care to dogs and cats, feed and water according to schedules, and assist with kennel operations on site for victims of domestic violence.

You will contribute to cleaning, safety, and record-keeping processes, and support vet visits as needed while working a day shift in a nonprofit environment dedicated to helping families and animals alike.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; six months kennel experience preferred.
• Knowledge of basic animal care and vaccinations.
• Ability to maintain safety and cleanliness in a kennel environment.
• Comfort with driving a company vehicle and transporting animals if required.

Responsibilities

• Feed and water animals according to schedules and feeding instructions.
• Walk dogs daily and provide playtime and socialization for cats.

Job Location: Dallas, TX 75235, Position Type: Full Time, Education Level: High School, Salary Range: $18.00 Hourly, Job Shift: Day, Job Category: Nonprofit - Social Services, The Family Place Operations Team is seeking an animal lover and caretaker for our shelter animals that are brought in with our victims of domestic violence. This position requires a compassionate and personable person to work with and care for the animals and to complete additional work at the shelter when the animals are with their owners.

Position Summary:

Responsible for the basic care and feeding of animals at The Ann Moody Shelter. Assists in caring for pets, ensuring treatment is in line with safety standards. Assists the operations department with cleaning client shelter rooms, sorting incoming donations, sorting office supplies

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Animal Services 50% of time spent:
• Feeds and waters animals according to schedules and feeding instructions.
• Walks the dogs on a daily basis and provides daily playtime and provides cuddling and play activities with the cats.
• Mixes food, liquid formulas, medications, and food supplements according to prescriptions
• Observes animals to detect signs of illness, disease, or injury and informs the client and case manager and records notes for future reference.
• Bathes and cleans animals, when necessary.
• Cleans up after animals both inside the facility and outside, and cleans animal runs and cages as needed; changes litter boxes and food/water bowls.
• Assists clients and/ staff members on occasion with such tasks as helping restrain an animal, helping clients with their pets, etc.
• Makes arrangements for veterinarian visits for animals and transports animals securely to the vet or SPCA for health visits.
• Administration 50% of time spent:
• Assists in the upkeep of the constant flow of daily operational tasks that are essential to the animal care required by the Agency.
• Records information such as feeding schedules, appearance, behavior of animals that are boarded.
• Records and updates animal vaccinations and other treatments.
• Maintains the facility as a whole by performing tasks including, but not limited to, sweeping/mopping floors, wiping counters, taking out trash, and checking equipment and supplies, washing and drying towels, etc.
• Cleans equipment, facilities and kennels using chemicals and supplies; understands and follows all safety precautions when using chemicals in kennel.
• Ensures that cages and animals are properly numbered and identified and that personal property (toys, treats, blankets, leashes) are stored in the proper area identified.
• Follows all kennel policies and client related agency policies.
• Assists with organizing kennel inventory and works with the Facilities Manager to order kennel supplies.

Other Duties:

• Assists with cleaning shelter clients rooms when clients exit, which include removing trash from bedrooms, cleaning floors, walls, beds, cabinets and bathrooms.
• Sorts Amazon donations and packages and prepares it for other programs in the agency.
• Assists with packaging and delivering offices supplies and/or office equipment by transporting the supplies to other Family Place locations.
• Organizes and maintains the Ann Moody storage areas, including, but not limited to the development closet, food pantry and other Ann Moody storage areas.
• Inventories and maintains linens for the Ann Moody Shelter.
• Answers agency telephone politely and directs calls, as necessary.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Training:

Attends job related training and classes related to kennel operations and SPCA guidelines. Attends and completes all agency-related, compliance training for position. Completes the online, Red Cross Cat and Dog First Aid training within 30 days of employment with The Family Place.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent and six months of experience working in a kennel. Work experience can be paid or non-paid (voluntary hours).

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Texas Drivers License and clear driving record.

Knowledge and Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic animal care.
• Knowledge of vaccinations.
• Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
• Ability to teach other staff members kennel skills.
• Ability to maintain constant vigilance regarding open doorways that could allow pets to escape from the facility.
• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to maintain confidence around pets.
• Ability to operate a washer and dryer.
• Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
• Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
• Ability to follow all safety procedures for handling cleaning materials.
• Ability to follow all animal health guidelines.
• Ability to drive a company vehicle safely and within all legal guidelines.
• Ability to answer a telephone and use a personal computer to record information and complete training.
• Ability to work with a diverse population and communicate clearly, written and oral.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Ability to safely drive a Family Place vehicle, when necessary.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases. Regularly stand for extended periods. Frequently walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch, and lift or move up to 50 pound. Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required. Ability to work weekends and evening hours for special projects.

Work Location:

Work must be performed on site at the shelter.
