Job description

Kennel Coordinator

Every dog deserves exceptional care while they wait for home-and every great animal-care team needs someone who can lead from right alongside them. That someone could be you.

Humane Society for Hamilton County | Fishers, IN $17.00-$18.00/hour | Full-Time

Our kennel team is responsible for the daily care, safety, enrichment, and well-being of the dogs who depend on us-and we're looking for a Kennel Coordinator who can help lead that team while still being willing to jump in and do the work alongside them.

This isn't a position where you manage from behind a desk.

As a Kennel Coordinator, you'll help keep the kennel running from start to finish: directing daily priorities, coaching and training Animal Care Attendants, making sure cleaning and animal-care standards are met, responding when something doesn't look right, and helping the team adjust when the day inevitably doesn't go according to plan.

You’ll be one of the people your team looks to when they're unsure what comes next.

You’ll also be watching the animals just as closely-making sure they receive the right food, clean bedding, enrichment, exercise, water, and living conditions while identifying changes in behavior, appetite, health, or emotional well-being that need immediate attention.

And because leadership here means being able to step onto the court when your team needs you, you'll need to be comfortable performing the same hands-on animal-care responsibilities you expect from your staff.

You’ll help train new employees, redirect team members when priorities get off track, support scheduling and daily operations, assist with adopter interactions and animal introductions, and step into a larger leadership role when your manager is away.

It's fast-paced. It's physical. Dogs bark. Plans change. Emergencies happen. Some days will absolutely test you.

But if you're the kind of person who can look at a busy kennel, figure out what needs to happen next, bring a team together, and still remember that every task ultimately affects an animal waiting for a home, this could be exactly where you belong.

You might be the one if you:
  • Have at least 2 years of animal-handling experience with dogs and/or cats in a shelter, veterinary clinic, boarding, training, or similar environment
  • Have supervised or managing people
  • Are comfortable safely and humanely handling both dogs and cats
  • Know how to coach people, redirect performance, and address problems instead of letting them grow
  • Can stay organized and make good decisions when several things need attention at once
  • Are comfortable having difficult conversations with employees or customers when necessary
  • Are confident using computers, Microsoft Office, email, and database systems such as PetPoint
  • Can pivot quickly when an animal, employee, adopter, or operational situation changes the plan
  • Are flexible to work nights and weekends
  • Believe every life is worth saving-our No-Kill Philosophy and "whatever it takes" attitude are part of who we are
What's in it for you:
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) matching
  • Vacation and PTO accruing from day one
  • Discounted care and free supplies for your own pets
  • The opportunity to grow your animal-welfare leadership experience
  • A team that shows up every day because the animals are counting on us
