Job Summary:


Under the direction of the principal and teacher(s), the Elementary Aide assists teachers in a variety of capacities in the instruction and supervision of students. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position. As school needs change, your job description and essential functions could change from year to year to include Playground, Lunchroom, Classroom, STEM, Art, etc.)


Essential Functions


  • Assists in the preparation of instructional materials.

  • Assists in the instruction of students and other classroom activities as needed.

  • May tutor students individually or in small groups under the direction of the teacher.

  • Assists with physical and emotional maintenance of students with disabilities including assessing curriculum and participating in school or classroom activities.

  • Assist students needing supplemental help with various school subjects and programs.

  • Assist in the administration of a variety of tests and monitor students’ academic progress.

  • Keeps accurate data on assigned students or groups of students.

  • Supports a school environment that helps students develop and maintain a positive self-concept.

  • Support classroom behavior management to maintain a positive and focused learning environment.

  • Maintains professional confidentiality regarding student information.

  • Maintains effective and positive communication with students, teachers, parents, patrons and administration.

  • Positive interaction with students, teachers, social workers, psychologists, support personnel and administrators.

  • Assists in school events at the direction of the principal

  • Requires ability to work effectively with staff and students

  • Requires ability to exercise emotional control in difficult situations.

  • Requires ability to solve a variety of problems relating to individual student needs and behaviors. Problem solving is guided by policies and procedures set by administration and the licensed teachers.

  • Requires knowledge of and assistance for the safety and security of students assigned to the classroom (e.g., helping students on and off buses on a rotating schedule, supervising play activities, field trips and lunches).

  • Effectively implements interventions and strategies as outlined in Individualised Education Plans (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), or other student success plans.

  • Collects behavior data and provides reports and/or graphs of the data to school personnel for use in developing behavior intervention plans.

  • Provides feedback about specific student needs.

  • May assist in on-the-job training to other paraeducators as appropriate.

  • Responds to critical situations in a variety of locations on a temporary, as needed basis.

  • Demonstrates flexibility, the ability to work independently and problem solve.

  • During times of emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities.

  • Supervision of a student in a location outside the classroom as needed.

  • Participate in professional development as directed by your administrator.

  • Must be able to work assigned hours.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administrator.


Lunchroom/Recess Supervision

Supports a safe, positive, and organized environment during student recess and lunch periods. This role ensures student well-being, promotes respectful behavior, and assists with maintaining school policies.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Supervise students during recess and lunch to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.

  • Monitor playground and lunchroom activities, intervening when necessary to prevent accidents or conflicts.

  • Enforce school rules and encourage positive social interactions among students.

  • Assist students with basic needs, such as opening food containers or addressing minor concerns.

  • Respond promptly to incidents, injuries, or emergencies following school protocols.

  • Communicate effectively with teachers and staff regarding student behavior or issues.

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in lunchroom areas, including assisting with cleanup as needed.

  • Support inclusion and fairness during games and activities on the playground.

  • Report any safety hazards or equipment concerns to appropriate personnel.

  • Serve as a positive role model, promoting respect and responsibility among students.


Classroom Support

Responsible for assisting teachers in the effective delivery of instruction and ensuring a positive and supportive learning environment for elementary school students. They collaborate with classroom teachers and other educational professionals to enhance the educational experience for all students.



  • Provide one-on-one or small group instruction to students as directed by the teacher.

  • Reinforce concepts introduced by the teacher and help students with classwork and assignments.

  • Support classroom discipline and behavior management by reinforcing established rules and expectations.

  • Help maintain a positive and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning.

  • Provide additional support for students who are struggling academically or require extra help.

  • Prepare instructional materials, visual aids, and classroom displays.

  • Organize and maintain educational resources, such as textbooks, supplies, and technology.

  • Stay informed about best practices in education and special education.

  • Promote a culturally sensitive and inclusive classroom environment that respects diversity and fosters acceptance among students.


Attendance is an Essential Function of this Position


  • Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.


Other Functions


  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.


Physical Requirements (including, but not limited to, the following):

Must be able to:



  • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

  • Move about inside and outside the school to access files, students and machinery.

  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, computer, computer printer.

  • Occasionally ascend/descend a ladder/stairs to access high objects or different levels of the building.

  • Constantly positions self to maintain files, students, or objects.

  • Have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

  • Have the ability to observe details at close and far range.

  • Frequently move items weighing up to 50 pounds across the classroom for various needs.

  • May work in outdoor weather conditions.

  • Aides in Special Education and P.E. may be required to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
