Job Description

Title: Elementary Aide

Emphasis/es: Math Intervention, Student Advocacy

Calendar/Contract: 180 Days

Salary Schedule: Lane 4(B) of the Educational Support Paraprofessionals Salary Schedule

Hours: 3.0 hours/day | 15.0 hours/week

Job Summary: Under the direction of the principal and teacher(s), the Elementary Aide assists teachers in a variety of capacities in the instruction and supervision of students. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position. As school needs change, your job description and essential functions could change from year to year to include Playground, Lunchroom, Classroom, STEM, Art, etc.

This position is funded, in full or in part, through grant allocations or student enrollment-based funding sources. Continued employment (or the position’s hourly workload) is contingent upon the availability of future funding, as determined on yearly basis.

General Functions
  • Assists in the preparation of instructional materials.
  • Assists in the instruction of students and other classroom activities as needed.
  • May tutor students individually or in small groups under the direction of the teacher.
  • Assists with physical and emotional maintenance of students with disabilities, including assessing curriculum and participating in school or classroom activities.
  • Assists students needing supplemental help with various school subjects and programs.
  • Assists in the administration of a variety of tests and monitor students’ academic progress.
  • Keeps accurate data on assigned students or groups of students.
  • Supports a school environment that helps students develop and maintain a positive self-concept.
  • Supports classroom behavior management to maintain a positive and focused learning environment.
  • Maintains professional confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Maintains effective and positive communication with students, teachers, parents, patrons and administration.
  • Positive interaction with students, teachers, social workers, psychologists, support personnel and administrators.
  • Assists in school events at the direction of the principal.
  • Requires ability to work effectively with staff and students.
  • Requires ability to exercise emotional control in difficult situations.
  • Requires ability to solve a variety of problems relating to individual student needs and behaviors. Problem solving is guided by policies and procedures set by administration and the licensed teachers.
  • Requires knowledge of and assistance for the safety and security of students assigned to the classroom (e.g., helping students on and off buses on a rotating schedule, supervising play activities, field trips and lunches).
  • Effectively implements interventions and strategies as outlined in Individualised Education Plans (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), or other student success plans.
  • Collects behavior data and provides reports and/or graphs of the data to school personnel for use in developing behavior intervention plans.
  • Provides feedback about specific student needs.
  • May assist in on-the-job training to other paraeducators as appropriate.
  • Responds to critical situations in a variety of locations on a temporary, as needed basis.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, the ability to work independently and problem solve.
  • During times of emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities.
  • Supervision of a student in a location outside the classroom as needed.
  • Participate in professional development as directed by your administrator.
  • Must be able to work assigned hours.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administrator.
Math Intervention

Responsible for assisting in the delivery of effective math instruction to elementary school students. This position involves working closely with classroom teachers and instructional coach to provide targeted math interventions, monitor student progress, and create a supportive environment that fosters mathematical development.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in implementing research-based math programs and strategies to support students’ mathematical development.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group math instruction to students who require additional support.
  • Use a variety of instructional materials and resources to engage students in math activities.
  • Administer math assessments as directed by classroom teachers.
  • Track and record student progress in math and share this information with the instructional team.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align math instruction with classroom curriculum and goals.
  • Communicate regularly with teachers to discuss student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Organize and maintain math resources, including textbooks, manipulatives, and technology tools.
  • Assist in creating a math-friendly classroom environment.
Student Advocacy

Assists students who may be below proficiency and need additional support. This position implements and monitors intervention for students, supports the development and implements classroom supports, and models techniques for staff in teaching positive student behavior. Primary duties include, but are not limited to, engaging in the following activities with support and direction:

  • Responsible for providing guidance and advocacy to students to ensure they meet academic and behavioral requirements to move to the next grade level.
  • Providing educational support to students to improve their skills using class time for student instruction and remediation.
  • Link students and their families to school and community resources.
  • Coordinate with community partners to build resources.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional time.
  • Facilitate social and emotional growth with students.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing work priorities; displaying tact and courtesy; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; being attentive to detail; and working with detailed information/data.
  • Participate in a direct service or consultative role in crisis situations.
Attendance is an Essential Function of this Position
  • Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Physical Requirements (including, but not limited to, the following)
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Move about inside and outside the school to access files, students and machinery.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, computer, computer printer.
  • Occasionally ascend/descend a ladder/stairs to access high objects or different levels of the building.
  • Constantly positions self to maintain files, students, or objects.
  • Have the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Have the ability to observe details at close and far range.
  • Frequently move items weighing up to 50 pounds across the classroom for various needs.
  • May work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Aides in Special Education and P.E. may be required to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous related experience preferred.
