Job Summary

We are seeking a dependable and motivated K-9 Trainee / Kennel Assistant – Armed Patrol/Flex to join our K-9 Operations team.

This position combines K-9 kennel responsibilities, K-9 training support, and armed mobile patrol assignments. The selected trainee may be assigned a company take-home patrol vehicle for authorized company operations.

Applicants must possess a current California BSIS Guard Card and applicable BSIS Firearms Permit required for armed assignments and remain properly licensed and qualified throughout their armed assignment.

This is not exclusively a K-9 handling position. Kennel cleaning and maintenance are mandatory duties.

Required Availability

Monday–Thursday: Night Shift Saturday: Day Shift

Friday & Sunday: No regularly scheduled availability required.

This is a part-time/flex position. Actual hours may fluctuate based on operational requirements, K-9 training, kennel responsibilities, client coverage, and patrol assignments. Specific hours or a minimum number of weekly hours are not guaranteed unless otherwise provided in writing.

Responsibilities

• Clean, disinfect, and maintain K-9 kennels and surrounding areas
• Remove animal waste and properly dispose of contaminated materials
• Provide fresh water and approved feeding according to established instructions
• Clean food/water containers, bedding, crates, and K-9 equipment
• Inspect kennels for damage, hazards, sanitation concerns, or security issues
• Assist authorized K-9 handlers with routine care and training
• Participate in supervised K-9 training exercises
• Learn proper K-9 handling, safety, control, and deployment procedures
• Maintain K-9 vehicles, crates, leads, training equipment, and operational gear
• Maintain required kennel, care, equipment, and training logs
• Conduct assigned armed vehicle and foot patrols
• Perform property checks and maintain a professional security presence
• Respond to calls for service as assigned by Dispatch or supervision
• Complete accurate daily activity and incident reports
• Maintain assigned company patrol vehicle and equipment
• Follow company firearms, use-of-force, K-9, patrol, vehicle, and safety policies
• Perform additional K-9, patrol, and operational support duties as assigned

K-9 Training & Bite-Suit Participation

Applicants should understand that this position involves direct participation in working-dog training.

As part of supervised K-9 training, trainees may be required to wear approved protective bite-training equipment, including a bite suit and/or protective sleeve, and participate as a decoy/helper during controlled training exercises.

Working with trained K-9s involves inherent physical hazards. Even when proper protective equipment and training procedures are used, potential injuries can include:

• Dog bites or puncture injuries
• Bruising and abrasions
• Muscle strains or sprains
• Falls or impact injuries
• Scratches
• Injuries associated with physical movement during K-9 training

Participation in any bite-work exercise must occur under authorized supervision, with appropriate protective equipment, established training procedures, and applicable company safety requirements.

Trainees are expected to immediately report injuries, damaged protective equipment, unsafe conditions, or concerns regarding a training exercise to K-9 leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current California BSIS Guard Card required
• Current applicable California BSIS Firearms Permit required
• Must maintain required firearms qualifications for armed assignments
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required
• Must meet company requirements for operation of a company vehicle
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Must be comfortable working in close proximity to large, high-drive working K-9s
• Must be willing to participate in supervised K-9 training, including wearing approved bite-training protective equipment
• Must be willing and able to clean kennels and handle animal waste
• Ability to follow K-9 handler instructions and established safety procedures
• Ability to perform physically demanding training and patrol duties
• Ability to write clear and professional security reports
• Previous dog, kennel, armed security, military, public safety, or animal-care experience preferred but not required

Take-Home Patrol Vehicle

The selected employee may be assigned a company-owned take-home patrol vehicle based on operational requirements.

The employee must maintain a valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and continued eligibility under company vehicle policies.

The vehicle remains company property and is provided for authorized business purposes. Take-home vehicle privileges may be modified or discontinued based on operational needs, driving eligibility, assignment changes, or policy compliance.

Important Position Information

The K-9 Trainee / Kennel Assistant – Armed Patrol/Flex position is a training and operational support assignment. Appointment does not guarantee advancement to K-9 Handler or any other position.

Trainees will not independently deploy or handle a K-9 unless they have completed applicable training and have been specifically authorized by K-9 Division leadership.

Kennel maintenance is a mandatory part of this position. K-9 operations include cleaning kennels, sanitation, animal care, equipment maintenance, physical training, supervised bite-work exercises, and armed patrol responsibilities.
