Job summary

Zachry Group in Pasadena, Texas, is seeking a Planner to support Capitol Projects in estimating and planning. The role partners with maintenance, operations, area planners and project teams to deliver detailed planning for turnaround activities in maintenance and project work.

Key duties include developing project scope for controls tasks, creating and linking schedules with engineering, procurement and construction, tracking progress, generating Earned Value reports, and communicating impacts

Qualifications

  • High school diploma with previous experience in other functional areas.
  • 5+ years in engineering project controls within Refining, Chemicals, Power, Food & Beverage or Renewables; experience developing and maintaining engineering schedules.
  • Experience in cost and schedule analysis.
  • Leads project meetings and makes presentations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to resolve complex situations.
  • Knowledge of project management software: Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Excel.
  • Proven record leading the project controls effort on assigned projects.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Understanding of Cost Management, Estimating, and Change Control.
  • High degree of computer literacy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with ability to interact at all levels.
  • Dependable, meeting deadlines, working independently, accountable, punctual, good attendance.
  • Professional attitude and ability to work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the project manager in developing project controls scope.
  • Study and understand project documents for schedules.
  • Prepare schedules with relevant personnel.
  • Convert scope into linked, resourced schedule.
  • Prepare realistic schedules integrating engineering, procurement and construction.
  • Develop progress curves and manpower histograms.
  • Monitor progress and prepare progress reports.
  • Collect expended man-hours and prepare Earned Value reports.
  • Prepare, review and issue reports to stakeholders.
  • Advise management on impacts and contingencies to finish earliest.
  • Provide resource forecast data.
  • Contribute to budget forecasting.
  • Manage cost discipline and forecast man-hour budgets and changes.
  • Participate in schedule and project risk analysis.
  • Analyze progress and advise corrective actions.

Job Description

Planner role will support Capitol Projects in estimating and planning. These Planners would partner with maintenance and operational personnel, area planner and projects personnel, to provide detailed planning to turnaround activities in the respected areas for maintenance and project work.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the project manager in developing project scope of work for required Project Controls tasks
  • Study and understand all relevant project documents pertaining to the preparation of schedules
  • Work with all relevant project and discipline personnel to prepare schedules
  • Convert the scope of work document into a logically linked, resourced project schedule
  • Prepare realistic, achievable schedules using logical networks and where necessary integrate engineering, procurement, and construction schedules with an emphasis on the engineering and procurement pieces
  • Develop progress curves and manpower histograms
  • Monitor progress against project schedule and prepare progress reports
  • Collect expended man-hours and prepare Earned Value reports and analysis
  • Prepare, review, and ensure the timely issue of all relevant reports to stakeholders
  • Verbally and in writing advise project management and discipline personnel on impacts, and contingencies and generally guide the scopes towards the earliest possible finish
  • Provide realistic resource forecast data at a project and corporate level
  • Provide input into the budget forecasting process
  • Manage cost discipline to ensure accurate and timely control and forecasting of man‑hour budgets and ensure that the impact of all change requests is properly assessed and included in the schedules
  • Participate in schedule and project risk analysis as required
  • Analyze progress and effects on schedule and advise necessary corrective actions
Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in engineering project controls within the Refining, Chemicals, Power, Food & Beverage or Renewables industries Experience developing and maintaining engineering schedules
  • Experience in cost and schedule analysis
  • Leads project meetings and makes presentations
  • Problem‑solving skills, work to resolve complex situations with appropriate management
  • Requires a working knowledge of project management software, specifically Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and Excel
  • Must have a proven record and experience leading the project controls effort on assigned projects
  • Must have an understanding of the basic principles of project management
  • Requires a general understanding of Cost Management, Estimating, and Change Control
  • Must have a high degree of computer literacy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with staff at all levels
  • Dependable by meeting deadlines, working independently, being accountable for work, maintaining focus, being punctual, and having a good attendance record
  • Maintain a professional attitude and be able to work independently or work as a team member when needed

Physical Demands

Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, video chat, and software systems. Position may include visits to construction sites and industrial facilities requiring mobility (on the ground and at heights) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to hardhat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, and work boots.

Work Environment

Employee will work primarily in an office environment but may require occasional travel to off‑site work locations. On construction sites, noise levels will be moderate to high. Job sites may contain the following: light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. Noise levels vary and may include bells, whistles, and alarms.
