• Active CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain prior to season start); state coaching certifications and required safety clearances.

Responsibilities

• Teach foundational and intermediate wrestling techniques; plan daily practice sessions for varying skill levels.
• Foster physical fitness, mental toughness, discipline, and sportsmanship; monitor academic progress and character development.
• Work with the Varsity Head Coach to ensure consistent instruction, conditioning, and team standards across JV and Varsity.
• Oversee the JV team during home and away meets and tournaments, including weigh-ins and post-match evaluations.
• Enforce safety guidelines and coordinate with the Athletic Trainer for injuries; manage equipment and scheduling.
• Promote high standards of conduct on the mat, in class, and in the community.

Position Summary

The Junior Varsity (JV) Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the JV wrestling program. This role focuses on teaching core technical fundamentals, building physical conditioning, instilling sportsmanship, and preparing student-athletes to transition successfully into varsity-level competition. The JV Coach works in close coordination with the Varsity Head Coach to align strategy, technique, and program culture across all levels.

Key Responsibilities

• Instruction & Coaching: Teach foundational and intermediate wrestling techniques, rules, and strategies. Plan and lead engaging daily practice sessions that accommodate varying skill levels.
• Athlete Development: Foster physical fitness, mental toughness, discipline, and ethical sportsmanship among student-athletes. Monitor and support academic progress and character development.
• Program Alignment: Work alongside the Varsity Head Coach to ensure consistent technical instruction, vocabulary, conditioning programs, and team standards across the JV and Varsity squads.
• Meet & Tournament Management: Oversee the JV team during home and away dual meets and tournaments, including weigh-ins, match preparation, corner coaching, and post-match evaluations.
• Safety & Risk Management: Enforce weight-management guidelines, proper skin-check procedures, and safe training methods. Ensure prompt reporting and treatment of injuries in coordination with the Athletic Trainer.
• Administration & Operations: Maintain inventory and care of mats, uniforms, and team equipment. Assist with scheduling, transportation logistics, scorekeeping, and parent communication.
• Culture & Conduct: Promote high standards of conduct on the mat, in the classroom, and within the community. Model professionalism and positive mentorship at all times.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Experience: Prior wrestling experience at the high school or collegiate level required. Previous coaching experience at the middle school, club, or high school level is strongly preferred.
• Certifications:
  • Active CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or ability to obtain prior to season start).
  • State athletic association coaching certification and required safety clearances (e.g., Concussion in Sports, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Child Abuse Clearance, Background Check).
• Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and leadership abilities.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• Ability to physically demonstrate wrestling techniques and participate in active drills.
• Work environment includes gymnasiums and wrestling facilities with exposure to loud noise and physical exertion.
• Requires flexibility to work evenings, early mornings, and weekends during the season, including travel to away events.
