Job summary

Phillips Exeter Academy is seeking a JV Girls Head Hockey Coach to lead practice sessions, guide athletes, and prepare teams for competition. This on-campus, part-program role supports the winter season with daytime practices and both home and away games.

The coach will motivate players, assess their strengths, adjust techniques, and ensure safety and discipline while fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience coaching or playing sport at high school/college level preferred.
• Experience in an academic institution preferred.
• Experience working with adolescents in educational setting preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
• Provide training direction, encouragement, and motivation for games and tours.
• Keep abreast of rules, techniques, and coaching philosophies relevant to the sport.
• Adjust coaching techniques based on athletes' strengths and weaknesses.
• Instruct individuals or groups in game rules, strategies, and performance principles.
• Evaluate athletes' skills and review performance to gauge fitness and potential.

TITLE: JV Girls Head Hockey Coach

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

SCHEDULE: Sports teams have daytime practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday ,Friday, with home and away games/matches Wednesday and Saturday. Season begins November 16, 2026 through potentially March 7, 2027. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs.

Wage: $4,600 - $5,620 per season. Based on relevant experience.

Position Purpose

Instruct or coach teams and individual students in the fundamentals of sports. Demonstrate techniques and methods of participation. May evaluate athletes' strengths and weaknesses as possible recruits, or to improve the athlete’s technique to prepare them for competition.

Job Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and conduct practice sessions.
• Provide training direction, encouragement, and motivation in order to prepare athletes for games, competitive events, and/or tours.
• Keep abreast of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to their sport.
• Adjust coaching techniques based on the strengths and weaknesses of athletes.
• Instruct individuals or groups in sports rules, game strategies, and performance principles such as specific ways of moving the body, hands, and/or feet in order to achieve desired results.
• Evaluate athletes' skills, and review performance records, in order to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of athletics.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

• Has played sport in high school or college or has reached a level of expertise in the sport as an adult through participation coaching or through a formal coaching development program.
• Experience in an academic institution preferred.
• Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
• Physically able to act quickly in emergencies.
• Ability and dexterity to grasp and grip and safely operate sports equipment.
• Ability to lift and transport up to 25lbs without assistance.

Additional Requirements

• Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
• Clean driving record (reviewed annually).
