Job summary

Williamson County is seeking an experienced counselor to provide mental health services to Juvenile Services youth and families, across residential or field settings. You will deliver individual, group and family counseling, conduct crisis screening, and help coordinate resources with schools and communities.

The role includes charting, supervision of interns, and on-call coverage to support ongoing care. The position requires a master’s degree in behavioral health or related field and licensure

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in behavioral health, counseling or related field.
• Within six months: LMFT/LPC/LCSW/LMSW or related licensure.
• Within thirty days: valid Texas driver’s license and BLS/CPR and First Aid, Crisis Prevention Intervention.
• 1 year experience as licensed mental health practitioner or 2 years in a comparable qualified mental health capacity.
• 1 year experience working with youth or families.

Responsibilities

• Provides individual, group and family counseling to youth and their families.
• Conducts crisis screening for new clients.
• Maintains mental health charts and documentation.
• Trains Juvenile Services personnel on trauma care.
• Responds to mental health crisis and provides crisis intervention.
• May provide clinical supervision of graduate student interns.
• Performs administrative duties in support of Counseling Services.
• Home and school visits to track progress.
• Attends meetings and trainings as necessary.
• Serves as on-call counselor on rotating basis.

Job description

Reporting directly to a Counseling Supervisor, responsible for providing counseling and mental health services to Juvenile Services youth and families, either in residential or field settings.

• Provides individual, group and family counseling to youth and their families
• Conducts crisis screening for new clients
• May provide clinical supervision of graduate student interns
• Administrative duties in support of Counseling Services
• Provides counseling services to youth and families, requiring complex and long-term care
• Assists in providing and coordinating community resources based on youth and family need
• Participates in identifying and treatment of mental health needs
• Responds to mental health crisis and provides crisis intervention
• Assists in planning and implementation of mental health programs
• Serves as mental health liaison for youth, families and medical professionals
• Supports youth and families with transition and continuity of mental health care
• Conducts mental health and counseling assessments
• Creates and maintains all mental health charts and documentation
• Coaches non-mental health personnel on youth mental health issues
• Assists with the training and development of counseling interns
• Conducts home and school visits to track progress
• Trains Juvenile Services personnel on trauma care
• Provides progress update to mental health professionals
• Attends all meetings and trainings as necessary
• Serves as on-call counselor on rotating basis as assigned
• Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, repetitive motions, and standing
• Position involves performing non-violent physical restraint
• Position involves operating motor vehicles
• Position involves participating or leading adventure-based activities
• Position involves occasional lifting and carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

• Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment
• Maximum security facility behind locked doors
• Continuous contact with youth accused of or adjudicated for various crimes
• Exposure to aggressive behavior, bodily fluids, and youth with mental health needs
• May be required to perform work outdoors in inclement weather (heat, cold, wet, conditions)
• Some travel between work sites as required

IRREGULAR HOURS

• Includes regular occurring evening and weekend hours and occasional holiday hours
• Work schedule and on-call schedule assigned
• Ability to provide crisis intervention 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Position requires 24 hour on-call schedule rotation
• May be deemed essential personnel in the event of an emergency
• Essential personnel for emergency situations; discretion of department director
• Regular attendance is required

• Master’s degree in behavioral health, counseling or related field or graduation within three (3) months of employment, and licensing requirements (see licensure requirements below)
• One (1) year of experience as a licensed mental health practitioner, or at least two (2) years in a comparable qualified mental health capacity
• One (1) year of experience working with youth or families
• Working knowledge of specific job-related technology
• Prior experience overseeing programs and projects

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required within six (6) months of hire:

• One of the following:
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Associate
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or intern/Associate
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
  • Associate Sex Offender Therapist Provider (ASOTP)
  • Licensed Sex Offender Therapist Provider (LSOTP)

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

• Valid Texas driver’s license
• Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR and First Aid Certification
• Crisis Prevention Intervention

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
• Two (2) to three (3) years of experience as a licensed mental health professional
• Two (2) to three (3) years of experience working with youth
• Bilingual in Spanish
