Job summary

Dallas County is seeking an entry-level Juvenile Detention Officer to supervise youths in a 24-hour facility, ensuring health, safety, and welfare in line with department policies. You will provide individual and group counseling to youths, make risk-based decisions during crises, and document actions for accountability.

The role also involves disciplinary duties, back-up support for staff, and potential transport or intake/discharge tasks.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with youth, staff and the public.
• First Aid/CPR certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Texas driver’s license with good driving record.
• Must pass extensive background checks and mandatory drug testing.

Responsibilities

• Supervise youths in a 24-hour detention facility to ensure health, safety and welfare.
• Provide individual and group counseling to youths to promote responsibility and alternatives.
• Make sound judgments during crises and report actions to supervisor.
• Discipline youths per facility rules and document behaviors for staff.
• Serve as back-up to staff for tasks such as transport, intake/discharge, and handling with care procedures.
• Conduct room checks, searches, and drills; transport youths to appointments.
