Job summary

Douglas County in Nebraska is seeking a Detention Officer to monitor daily detainee activities, enforce rules, and maintain a safe, secure facility. You will build rapport with inmates, report incidents, and coordinate with staff during shifts.

Qualifications include an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field and at least one year of work with adolescent youth. A valid driver’s license, pre-employment background check, and random drug testing are required.

Qualifications

• One year of work experience with adolescent youth is required.
• Valid driver’s license and transportation upon hire required.

Responsibilities

• Monitor daily activities of detainees and review information from the previous shift.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, supervisors, and the public.
• Comply with civil service policies, department policies, and laws to maintain a safe environment.
• Familiarize detainees with rules and operating procedures.
• Provide positive reinforcement and act as a role model for detainee behavior.
• Inspect units for safety, contraband, hazards, or security breaches.
• Maintain knowledge of policies and regulatory requirements including PREA.
• Report unusual behavior or incidents to the Duty Supervisor.
• Respond to emergencies and restrain disruptive detainees as necessary.
• Document incidents and pass information to oncoming staff.
• Coordinate and monitor detainee activities and transportation.
