Job summary

Akumen, Inc. is hiring a Junior Software Developer to support the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of enterprise software for federal customers.

You will work with senior developers to participate in the full software lifecycle and gain hands-on experience with cloud-native development and Agile practices. The role requires residency in DC, Maryland, or Virginia and onsite work in Washington, DC, with a path to contributing to RESTful APIs, databases, and secure coding

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
• 2+ years of professional software development experience or relevant internships developing enterprise or web-based applications.
• Experience developing applications using C#/ .NET, Java, or similar OO languages, plus JavaScript frameworks like React or Angular.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure and Azure DevOps, including source control, work item tracking, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience developing RESTful APIs and working with SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development, best practices, and secure coding principles.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, debug, and maintain enterprise software applications under supervision.
• Assist with front-end and back-end components, RESTful APIs, and integrations using modern frameworks.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, sprint planning, and technical discussions.
• Support deployments, troubleshooting, production support, and CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps.
• Collaborate with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and UX designers to implement requirements.

Overview

As a Junior Software Developer , you will support the design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of enterprise software applications. Working alongside senior developers and technical leads, you will contribute to the full software development lifecycle while gaining hands‑on experience with modern development frameworks, cloud technologies, and DevSecOps practices.

The ideal candidate is a motivated software developer with a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn, and a passion for building high‑quality software solutions. This role offers the opportunity to work on enterprise applications that support business processes, workflows, analytics, and reporting capabilities for federal customers while expanding your knowledge of cloud‑native development and Agile methodologies.

All applicants must reside in DC, Maryland, or Virginia and be able to work onsite in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, debug, and maintain enterprise software applications under the guidance of senior developers and technical leads.

• Assist with the development of front‑end and back‑end components, RESTful APIs, and application integrations using modern development frameworks.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).

• 2 (two) or more years of professional software development experience or relevant internships developing enterprise or web‑based applications.

• Experience developing applications using C#/.NET, Java, or similar object‑oriented programming languages, along with JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular.

• Experience working with Microsoft Azure and Azure DevOps, including source control, work item tracking, and CI/CD pipelines.

• Experience developing RESTful APIs and working with relational databases such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL.

• Familiarity with Agile/Scrum development methodologies, software development best practices, and secure coding principles.

• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with ASP.NET Core, Spring Boot, or similar modern application frameworks.

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerization technologies.

• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Bicep.

• Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.

• Experience supporting federal government or other regulated environments.

Clearance Requirement

• A minimum of an active DoD Secret security clearance is required.
