Qualifications

Information Systems Laboratories, Inc. (ISL) is seeking a Junior Engineer for a full-time position in the Nuclear Safety Analysis team. ISL (www.islinc.com) is a high-tech, employee-owned technology-development company. ISL’s Energy, Space, and Risk Management division provides comprehensive support to the nuclear and space industries such as nuclear safety analysis, complex modeling & simulation, nuclear software development through the entire software lifecycle, regulatory framework and procedures development, waste management tracking, risk management, and cyber security.

Job Description

The applicant will work alongside safety analysis experts performing a mix of research and development and customer contract work. Customers are generally advanced reactor and fuel vendors requiring ISL’s unique safety analysis expertise to meet licensing requirements of the U.S. NRC or DOE. ISL has a culture of building from fundamentals to solve complicated engineering problems in the nuclear industry, including modeling and simulation of system and core thermal-hydraulics, fuel performance, radiological consequences, etc. To this end work tasks range from basic calculations with general office software to detailed analyses with approved safety analysis codes such as RELAP5-3D, MCNP, VIPRE01, FAST, etc. It also includes writing technical reports and white papers, creating presentations, and other like tasks needed to communicate ideas, problems, and solutions. The position offers a unique opportunity to learn from the brightest minds in the field, advance state-of-the-art applications, publish research, present at conferences and workshops, and develop industry contacts and relationships.

Requirements
  • A degree (B.S or M.S.) in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering;
  • 0 to 5 years of experience in nuclear;
  • A background in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, nuclear physics, and/or structural mechanics;
  • Good technical writing and communication skills;
  • A self-starter who:
    • works well within a team or independently,
    • has a demonstrated ability to solve complex problems,
    • can adapt to changing situations, and
    • has the drive to verify results and know they make sense
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and SharePoint.
Desired Skills
  • In-depth experience with thermal hydraulics (fluids, heat transfer, etc.);
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of nuclear physics;
  • Familiarity with assessing criticality and radiological consequences;
  • Experience with:
    • General calculation software such as Mathcad and/or Octave,
    • System analysis codes such as RELAP5-3D and/or TRACE,
    • Nuclear physics codes such as MCNP, SCALE, PARCS, etc.,
    • CFD and Multiphysics codes,
    • Solid modeling or CAD, and/or
    • Basic scripting or light programming skills (Python, Java, etc.).
