Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory seeks an Electrical Engineer in the Reactor Project Engineering department to design and analyze electrical and control systems for advanced nuclear reactors. You will collaborate with top scientists to develop designs for INL program sponsors at the Materials and Fuels Complex, with a 4x10 work schedule and Friday off.

Qualifications

Job Description

As an Electrical Engineer in the Reactor Project Engineering department at Idaho National Laboratory, you’ll shape the future of national energy supply by performing electrical and / or controls design and analysis of advanced nuclear reactors and associated systems. You’ll collaborate with world‑class scientists and engineers to develop designs that enable advanced nuclear reactor projects through multiple INL program sponsors. This position is located at our Materials and Fuels Complex, which hosts the core of the U.S. nuclear research and development capabilities with a diverse array of nuclear facilities and reactor experiment test beds. In this role you will collaborate with multiple organizations within INL and external reactor developer partners. Our team works a 4x10 schedule with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions
  • Design and analyze electrical and control systems to meet requirements in accordance with project documentation and relevant codes and standards for advanced nuclear reactors and associated facilities and systems
  • Review and determine adequacy of electrical and controls designs prepared by external organizations.
  • Collaborate with customers to develop system alternatives and analyze risks, costs, and performance measures.
  • Provide technical reviews of design outputs and ensure compliance with technical baseline requirements.
  • Establish and maintain configuration management of assigned systems and maintain existing drawings and databases.
  • Develop functional and operational requirements, system design descriptions, and test procedures.
  • Provide oversight of electrical and controls projects using applicable field experience.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other engineers, partners, and constructors to execute testing activities.
  • Provide input on the functionality of test equipment and support procurement activities.
  • Evaluate and assess system/equipment performance to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Create and execute design of experiments, including data acquisition and analysis.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical personnel.
  • Oversee the design and maintenance of high-risk electrical systems operations.
  • Direct and execute the application design, set-up, and operation of complex high power and high voltage equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned by engineering manager.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of electrical and control systems, electrical power engineering principles, and electronics theory.
  • Knowledge and practical application of relevant national consensus codes and standards as they apply to electrical and controls designs.
  • Practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Proficiency in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications to electrical and controls designs.
  • Knowledge of power electronic circuit topologies, microgrid design, dynamic and transient energy systems, modeling, and simulation of complex systems.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and implement solutions using scientific methods.
  • Skills in troubleshooting electrical equipment.
  • Ability to work and collaborate with multi-disciplinary, technical project teams.
  • Effective communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to interface effectively with management, technical personnel, and partners.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or directly related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Experience in R&D, systems engineering, and electrical power systems.
  • Experience using design and analysis programs such as ORCAD, CAD, MatLab, Labview, PowerWorld, and/or RTDS.
  • Experience designing, developing, and/or conducting experiments with electrical equipment.
  • Diagnostic experience with controller area networks.
  • Experience working with high-risk equipment, safety requirements, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering, instrumentation and control, and software systems applicable to experimental processes.

This role requires strong technical skills in electrical engineering, including power systems analysis, design, and experimentation. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to mentor junior staff are also essential. Familiarity with applicable safety requirements and the ability to work in various conditions are crucial.

Minimum Requirements
  • Level 3: Bachelor’s in electrical engineering or other related field from an ABET accredited institution and 5 years experience. Master's and 2 years of experience. PhD and 2 years of experience.
  • Level 4: Bachelor's in electrical engineering or other related field and 9 years of experience. Master's and 6 years of experience. PhD and 4 years of experience.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Job Information
  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($95,256 - $195,288)/ Level 4 ($114,360 - $234,336). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the people is required.
