Job Title: Junior-Level Content Writer - 153134-1

Location: REMOTE (PST hours preferred)

Schedule: M-F, 40 HR

Duration/Start Date: 6/9/2025

Salary: $24/hourly

Candidates with previous experience working at Microsoft Corporation, either as a full-time employee (FTE) or contractor, are strongly preferred.

Summary

The main function of a Content Writer is to write technical materials, such as equipment materials, appendices, or operating and maintenance instructions. A typical technical writer is responsible for organizing, editing and maintaining technical records and files.

Typical Day in the Role

Purpose of the Team: The purpose of this team is to support Minecraft players when they encounter issues with the game and related products. The main focus of the Player Care Content Team is to reduce player need to contact support by providing best-in-class self-service resources and ensure accurate and timely support resources when players do need to file a ticket. This resource will develop content for help.minecraft.net, email templates that address player issues and knowledge base resources used by support agents and also assist in improving training resources for Player Care Helpers.

Key projects: Developing new content and improving existing content used to support Minecraft players. Differ day to day.

Typical task breakdown and operating rhythm: The role will consist of 15% Meetings & 85% Heads down. Will partner with a team member and will be writing for the most part.

Job Responsibilities
  • Organize material and complete writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style and terminology

Maintain records and files of work and revisions

Confer with client to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be developed for publication

  • Research, plan, design, write, and continuously update game-related content and training materials.
  • Create a wide range of high-quality documentation using clear and concise language.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams located around the world to document clear information on tools, APIs, processes, and agent workflows.
  • Create player-facing support content and agent-facing documentation and training materials for new launches and updates.
  • Review and edit content provided by partners, players, and the community.
  • Collaborate with program managers and player support to keep up with the latest game developments and to author content that will attract and support players.
  • Use data to inform content and training strategy and improvements.
  • Align with business goals and team priorities.
Candidate Requirements

Years of Experience Required: 1-2 overall years of experience in the field. Additional experience is nice.

Degrees or certifications required: BA/BS degree or equivalent experience is required to be eligible for this role.

Disqualifiers: Candidates with no gaming experience will not be eligible for the role (the sponsor has had some talented writers without gaming experience but had a lot of difficulty ramping them up). The sponsor is also not looking for marketing content writers, this role will create content for customer support, knowledge base, and training content.

Best vs. Average: The ideal resume contains experience writing support and troubleshooting content, including working with support and helpdesk teams. Experience with Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) content types is a big plus. The ideal candidate is a gamer and has their own gaming consoles that they can use to validate their work and walk through the player experience.

Qualifications
  • Candidates need experience creating consumer-facing instructions for technical processes for providing self-service and email support to customers.
  • Experience creating or reviewing training resources and developing internal knowledge base resources is preferred.
  • The supplier must upload/include a Writing portfolio in addition to the resume during submitting the candidate.
  • 1-2 years of experience writing and publishing game-related content or training.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, concisely, and accurately.
  • Passion for gaming and a sincere interest in the latest technology trends.
  • Desire to build a world-class player experience from the ground up.
Top 3 Hard Skills Required + Years of Experience
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with Zendesk publishing and contact management tools.
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with Learning and Design (L&D) tools
  • Minimum 1-2 years experience with SharePoint
  • A portfolio or writing samples are required to be attached for consideration for this role. The best portfolio includes samples of written troubleshooting content to help players problem solve. Ideal portfolios also include previous help center documentation, good concise descriptions of how to complete a task, well structured content, and tools used to optimize search discovery of this content.
Hard Skills Assessments
  • Expected Dates that Hard Skills Assessments will be scheduled: ASAP week of 6/9.
  • Hard Skills Assessment Process: The assessment process will include a 45-minute HSA with the Microsoft sponsor and potentially another member of the team attending for visibility. If necessary a second round may be scheduled.
  • Required Candidate Preparation: Candidates should have a Portfolio of writing samples prepared prior to the assessment.
