Job summary

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking a part-time middle school athletic coach for Session 2. The position begins on 11/4/2026 and runs through 1/7/2027, with a pay rate of $17.13 per hour.

The role focuses on teaching fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to 6th–8th grade athletes and requires adherence to WIAA and district policies. Responsibilities include organizing after-school practices, coordinating with athletic directors, managing equipment, and maintaining safety and injury

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach.
• Must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation).
• First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.
• Knowledge of Tacoma School District and WIAA policies and guidelines.
• Ability to motivate students and maintain fair discipline.

Responsibilities

• Supervises student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
• Plans, develops and implements an effective program for the particular sport to prepare athletes physically and mentally.
• Organizes practice sessions four days a week for 7th–8th grade teams and two days for 6th grade teams, after school.
• Coordinates facility use with building athletic director; follows budgeting and equipment procedures; handles injuries and maintains records.
• Informs students and parents of eligibility rules and sport-specific regulations; posts rules.
• Establishes equipment issuance and records, conducts weekly safety checks, and ensures return of all equipment.
• Makes written recommendations to building athletic director regarding program, facilities, and transportation problems.
